In Washington Irving’s “The Devil and Tom Walker”, the character sells his soul but nonetheless refuses Satan’s demand that he become a slave trader as going too far. They settle on moneylending.

That was 1824.

They knew.

It's a little like the discussion around Columbus's crimes where people act like we are imposing modern standards when in fact everyone was horrified by him at the time.

I remember that once on Twitter someone told me that Song of the South is “now considered racist,” so I looked it up and sure enough, the NAACP had picketed the premiere.

People in the olden days had eyes.
one thing that is important to know is that BIRTH OF A NATION is so racist that people at the *time*, in 1915, were like, “holy shit this is racist”
When the slightest bit of research shows he was consistently racist and a daddy issues Confederate fanboy.

People try to paint BIRTH OF A NATION as a masterpiece with some unfortunate racism. The whole movie is racist, the “masterpiece “ thing was backfilled to excuse it.

Due to AI, I years ago had to shitcan the analytical essay part of my college aesthetics course. I replaced it with an adaptation project. They have to pitch how they’d produce a short story adaptation and pick a director, cinematographer, editor, sound designer from the films we watched in class.

Anybody know any songs about a girl where everyone’s first impression of her is that she’s really innocent, but when you get to actually talking to her, you find out she’s kinda got a dirty mind

I've spent the last 5 years on a book about the complex relationship between pop culture and the gay rights movement. This thread is a good reminder that art can do a great deal, but it's slow and cumulative. It gives people new ways to think, but it's not its job to "fix" things, and it doesn't.
Again, I truly *loved* this week’s episode of Heated Rivalry, but IT IS A WISH FULFILLMENT ROMANCE. The success of a gay hockey romance TV show, largely watched by people who are neither hockey players nor hockey fans, is not “proof that the world is ready and all we would do is love you”

Objectively fascinating argument to make given that Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist in debt for making up stories about children who died in mass shootings, was at Turning Point USA last year.
Ben Shapiro: "Today I want to talk about something even more important — how to discern those attempting to speak truth from frauds and grifters…The conservative movement is in danger from charlatans who claim to speak in the name of principle but actually traffic in conspiracy and dishonesty."

50 years of BARRY LYNDON.

Every frame is a painting. No one has ever captured light—or the human tragedy—quite like Kubrick did in 1975.
