In Islam, we pay zakat—you take 2.5% of your current wealth and send it wherever you want, locally or abroad, and that money MUST be given directly to someone below the poverty threshold (caveat: preferably Muslim, and they aren’t required to pay zakat).

I’m guessing the person who answered the call at the mosque was acting on these principles—they didn’t need the attention and helping people is part of the day-to-day operations.
I think the lesson is that it takes a system to encourage individuals to choose good over greed. Not just a religion.
