"The idea of a hierarchy of human value is a very well-marketed idea in our media and our politics, and things will really start to change when we place our blame more on those who are selling it for their own gain than those who are desperate enough to buy it."

~ Heather McGhee
Men would rather invade Venezuela than to decarbonize. What the hell.

If we eliminated the fossil fuel industry, we would also dismantle the war industrial complex, so of course we have both industries propping each other up.

We can live in a better world but we have this shit instead.

Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

The tl;dr before you get into this post is this: the SFWA came out, said that some AI usage was okay enough in books for the authors of those books to not to be disqualified from winning a Nebula a…

"So you see, consumer? It's mostly your fault for wanting things conveniently! It's not the fault of the company CEOs that supported the election of a president that blocks progress on climate change, or the fact that there's no reasonable rail network, or that delivery bikes aren't a thing here."🤡
When customers choose faster shipping and earlier delivery dates, the system shifts from optimized routing to whatever gets the package out fastest, and that means higher emissions, said Sreedevi Rajagopalan, a research scientist at MIT.

"This story doesn't need a sandworm"

This is almost always wrong. Arguably, EVERY story benefits from adding a huge subterranean worm with quasi-mystical or semi-supernatural powers, or equivalent (similar to Moby Dick).

Obviously the bigger the worm, the more literary quality it adds.

The government doesn’t need us to say stuff for them. They are adults, they can say their own things.
Bari Weiss spiked the CECOT story because she wanted to have Stephen Miller included and demanded to control the language 60 Minutes used to describe the men who were brutally tortured after being sent to El Salvador without due process.

Now would be a great time for a 10 episode, 20 hour prestige series about the ten years between 1916 and 1926, covering the establishment of the 8-hr work day & 5-day work week, in the US. Each episode would be one year & the middle episode should be entirely devoted to the Battle of Blair Mountain.

For humans, static electricity is a curiosity. For insects, it can be life or death: spiders use it to catch prey, bumblebees to collect pollen, and nematodes to leap onto passing flies.

The actual execution of it is so cringy. Like, whatever the technique, they couldn't bother to make it look even a TINY BIT like they're interacting or share the same location-appropriate lighting? This had to be made in 5 mins, like a comedy news show graphic for a gag, except it's an annual cover.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork
