"they think media and advertising are the same thing, and that traffic and audience are the same thing."

Friends, they are not the same thing.

My continuing sense is that people in politics may be very educated about political science, but not at all about media/advertising/consumer comms.

I found my 2009 morning pages while unpacking boxes this week — turns out 35-year-old me was already dreaming of the life I’m living now. Maybe turning 51 isn’t about becoming someone new, but about becoming increasingly yourself.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

Hello. I live in Los Angeles. The president is lying.

OH in NYC: 7-yr-old + dad.

Dad: Nora, you can’t lie like that.

Nora: I’m not lying.

Dad: What you said is not true.

Nora: You don’t know that. You always think you know the truth.

Dad: I know the truth more than you do.

Nora: Because you’re old? Sometimes young people know the truth too.

This is the astounding 1886 "Ajax and Cassandra" painting by Solomon J. Solomon that I mention. FIFTY SQUARE FEET in size. That veil, caught on the statue of Palladium Athena haunts me.

"Mother is the first environment." This phrase so moved me in this episode. Give yourself the gift of a listen this week. "Clock time" well spent.
New Episode: Katsi Cook, the Mohawk wise woman and renowned midwifery expert - modeling eldering as "generational wealth transmission" - is a beacon in an array of quiet powerful worlds — a magnetic, joyous, loving presence. Tune in where you listen to podcasts.

Jesus, a rebel who shunned wealth and preached about radical unconditional love for all people, including enemies, had his message first carried by a woman. What does this mean? open.substack.com/pub/carla/p/...

The worst part of all of this is that most of us (including me) didn’t even know the United States was bombing Houthi targets across Yemen until this Signal chat mishegas broke.

Really enjoyed this discussion, it felt like the best seminar-style discussion of ancient mythology, modern culture and psychology. Thoughtful, slow and left me thinking. Bravo. More, please. (PS It’s also wonderfully designed from a podcast production perspective, me thinks.)

everyone should listen to this in its entirety but journalists should listen to it multiple times. this is how you ask questions. you just keep asking simple, easily answerable stuff and the evasiveness becomes that much more glaring
In which the Department of Homeland Security struggles to answer a very simple question: "Is any criticism of the United States government a deportable offense?"

ONE parent. And in Florida, ONE man is responsible for 40% of all book challenges in the state. The book banners are a tiny minority. Make that clear by speaking up in favor of the freedom to read. (Email your school board!)
Thanks to @aclusc.bsky.social and @authorsabb.bsky.social working in SC to fight bans. The challenges have been brought by 1 parent who earlier filed 97 challenges in Beaufort County, nearly all of them denied. She's re-challenging now that a state law passed in July 2024 makes banning easy.

My advice for emerging artists and pros alike: it’s time for in person events.

The industry and community is scattered and algorithms are currently siloing us off.

Go to cons, festivals, screenings + launches, and other art events.

While social media is still shifting, invest in face to face.
