Is this also true if you’re prioritizing maintaining your current aesthetics knowing it costs your political movement power? This knife cuts both ways.
Prioritisation of aesthetics over morals and ethics is usually a tell-tale sign someone will go fash if given the right permission structure.

Unfortunately for my egalitarian instincts, this take is more right than it is wrong.

I’ve always wondered how something like this could happen but I’m living through the modern equivalent.

I told my professor that this was going to happen back in 2016 right after Trump’s first election and he called me paranoid. I wonder what he thinks now.
Yes, the world will go nuclear. Any country that can afford it will have to, and this will factorially increase the chance of someone using one.

Republicans' gift to humanity.

Democrats need to take this as a lesson on media and learn how to weaponize it the same way Trump and Republicans have.
real instructive that just by paying attention to the background hum of regular small plane crashes the media has created a perception of a sharp increase

It’s all about social policy and aesthetics. That’s why Bernie and Trump were both perceived as more moderate than Hillary. It’ll upset some but we need a Democratic candidate to run against the brand and the main interest groups within, but I don’t know how such a candidate survives the primary.
just a reminder for the next time the eternal "do Democrats need to moderate" discourse rolls around:

vast majority of Americans consider "moderate" and "progressive" to be adjectives that describe the appearance and rhetoric of a politician completely untethered from any policy position

We have to do the work of separating good Christians from the abominable policy of this administration that is harming so many while cloaking themselves in the aesthetics of Christianity.
Today these people are deported on military planes to Panama, meanwhile any Afrikaner is automatically accepted as a refugee

The sad part is this may be the most effective way to get Trump to reconsider. It’s not exactly clear what other avenues Dems could exercise to stop this behavior.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I strongly agree with Donald Trump,” said former Representative Steve Israel of New York, who headed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Canada is largely left of center, and making it the 51st state means more Democrats”. STOP THIS.
Canada as the 51st state? Trump thinks it would be a boon to his legacy. But it would also be a boon to Democrats, who would gain a lot more voters. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/17/u...

I think people have a tendency to not realize that this was reality for America throughout much of the 19th Century.
the doomer case (which i happen to subscribe to) is a breakdown of democratic and anti corruption norms which mean the state gets weaponized against opposition but these people are not building a durable replacement regime. there is no plan to cancel elections, or even contest them
Given that most Americans also seem rather unconcerned about the former, it could just go that way. Not with a bang but a whimper. On the other hand, if public opinion tips a bit more against Trump and DOGE, hold on to your hats.

I’ve always been a contrarian, but this feels correct to me. Although it was pretty jarring seeing the new wave of vitriolic awful people in the replies the last couple weeks on Twitter.
This is because Elon Musk took over Twitter, which elite Americans use as their deeply distorted viewing chamber to understand popular sentiment, and released a bunch of Nazis on to the site to argue that opposing racism and sexism is cringe
The racism and sexism so far just blows my mind. And not really a peep about it.

My pet theory has been that this is just a small part of a parental signaling arms race that has contributed to making the mental cost of parenthood large enough to have actual impacts on the reproduction rate.
This is a sort of weird thing to ask, but if you’re a women who had kids, when you started interacting with pregnancy shit, did the algorithm start recommending you a lot of like anti-vax stuff? I feel like I’ve seen a couple of women I used to know go down this rabbit hole.
She was a Bernie person when I actually knew her, then she got married and had kids and went fucking insane. I keep her on social media as a kind of petri dish for what that kind of person is thinking these days.
