The United States was the leading destination for top scientists from all over the world.

That is ending. Politicians ended it. It will cripple our future competitiveness.

And it’s such a bitter tragedy. Almost no Americans, Conservative or Liberal, grasp what is now being stolen from them.

Prof. Jochen Guck was one of the initial PIs that made our Excellence Cluster possible. He helped build the outstanding community at PoL, in addition to being a great scientist and person. You will be sorely missed Jochen.

With deep sadness, we share that Prof. Jochen Guck, Director at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light passed away on October 3. His visionary work bridged physics and medicine. We have lost a brilliant scientist and dear friend.

I have to keep this deliberately vague, but this is a total disaster for academic research.

And imposing it so suddenly is just cruel. I’ve got friends scrambling to get back to the US before midnight tonight. Do you know how hard that is to do on 36 hours of notice?
Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in blow to tech
The Trump administration said on Friday it would ask companies to pay $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas, prompting some big tech companies to warn visa holders to stay in the U.S. or quickly return.

I was on a H1B visa for part of my postdoc. Also when I started as Assistant Professor. Several of my postdocs where on H1Bs. This new fee will affect more academia than tech or finance companies because there is no way universities can pay that…

This is indeed a unique opportunity for @ec.europa.eu. But to ensure that „excellence thrives where it is enabled, protected & shared“ the % of funded proposals needs to stay the same (or actually increase). Otherwise it’s just a waste of talent.
The 2025 call for #MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships drew 17,058 applications worldwide.

A 64.6% increase from 2024, it's the most popular call in over four decades.

Excellence thrives where it is enabled, protected and shared — and Europe provides that environment.
