Great analysis here by David on the tale of two cities we still have in Mpls as revealed again in the 2025 election, but highlighting signs of hope from wards 8 and 12.
🧵 The great @maxhailperin.bsky.social was kind enough to do some Minneapolis 2025 election crosstabs on mayoral-council votes in wards 8 (Stevenson>Bassais) & 12 (Chowdhury>Thompson). These are inferred from the cast vote record which seems to have unintentionally sync’d mayor and council votes. 1/

Some thoughts on Eric Roper’s finger-wag in the mayor’s race: www.startribune.com/jacob-frey-r...
1. Asking “what chance did [Davis & Hampton] have ignores Frey’s agency is creating the race‘s dynamics. Frey sued the most moderate hope (Emily Koski) to cut off her money & intimated others. 1/
Roper: Jacob Frey can thank the far left for handing him another term
Frey was a vulnerable incumbent. But progressives banked on the wrong guy to beat him.

So many IEPolitical Committees pouring money to influence the Mpls election it is hard to keep with them all. Yuck!
"such as Safer Hennepin, a pro-Frey PAC that has raised about $162,000 and mailed anti-Fateh fliers."

star tribune should be noting safer hennepin are asking for republicans to vote for jacob frey. they're so anti omar fateh, they look right & welcome republicans

If he really cared, in my opinion, he or a top-level staffer would have welcomed them into a conference room and listened to them. He could have come back after 6 and done it. That was the easier and better thing to do. This was abusive and an insulting power play attempt not worthy of our mayor.
photos from the sit in 13 members of MIRAC staged in mayor jacob frey’s office yesterday. and they did not leave by 6pm, i am told police arrested them a little after midnight and they were processed and released this morning. i am also told frey was working elsewhere in downtown yesterday

It may sound like an exaggeration to say Weinhagen "bought Frey his strong mayor powers" but the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce was the 100% sole funder of the PAC that campaigned for the strong mayor charter change in 2021.

Thank you Soren.
This is a MAJOR issue that is preventing accountability. I will work with the mayor on the policy they need to wrest control of MPD from those maintaining the violent and unaccountable status quo!

We need new leadership who are willing to fire officers for shielding wrongdoing
Minneapolis City Auditor Robert Timmerman: "Great resistance" from MPD in cooperating with after action reviews, even after speaking with "well over a dozen senior leaders to explain... the requirements of them and their staff to cooperate."

It's good to see the city looking into this, and MPR covering it. It would be great if the state legislature could at least get out of the way and let cities of the first class have more options. Propery taxes and sales taxes tend to hit those with less income the hardest.
Facing increasing dependence on property taxes to cover the costs of city services, Minneapolis is exploring other ways to raise money. The Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation was briefed on a study by city staff, which took into account possible new revenue sources.

OMG. Money is absolutely corrupting our local elections.
screenshot of text message circulating among college students where a guy who is working for a frey-supporting PAC asks someone to get people in their frat to "vote and engage in the election" to get paid $350 for 3 hours of work, and if they win, they'll get a bonus

In Minneapolis, a network of big $ political committees—All of Mpls, We Love Mpls, and Thrive Mpls—share donors, staff, and messaging.

In July, We Love Mpls was cited by the Campaign Finance Board (CFB) for violating disclosure rules.

Here's why all of them could be in violation of MN laws. 👇

Worth the read. Likely true and sounds consistent with whT I know of the man I worked with in city government for 8 years.
2/ A question I ask every mayoral challenger is “why are you running?” People who run against Frey face an avalanche of $$ & elite wagon-circling. It’s no fun. Policies motive, and undoing injustices, but there’s often something they’ve experienced that make getting into the arena unavoidable.

$600 is the maximum contribution allowed for an individual to make to a city council member in an election year.
apparently when questioned about accepting landlord money from 110 grant resident, elizabeth shaffer says “it’s only $600.” if that’s the case, why not return it? it’s only $600. make a show of it, rejecting money from this slumlord who gave half a million to trump. tell him you reject his values

Another step backwards towards autocracy proposed by the charter commision. None of them are elected and it appears that democracy is not something they have much confidence in.
