The article accepts the idea that New College was a liberal enclave, and what is happening now is a rebalancing. I think this view is fundamentally wrong, embracing the assumptions of those who see their job as to save campuses from liberalism by any means necessary.
Whatever the culture and political leaning of the campus, it reflected the organic evolution of the the people on that campus, rather than a government-mandated imposition of values. The emphasis on ideological balance as a goal of higher education elides the forced nature of the New College project, the reliance on a series of coercive strategies to turn a campus against its traditions and culture. A gender studies program that students found value in is not equivalent to political appointees imposing a Charlie Kirk statute on campus.

The empty eye sockets were originally inset, probably with bone, as well as the eyebrows (with silver), the lips, and the nipples (with copper).

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death. The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died. While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants. Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Thanks to John Vincler's IG post, I went through Ron Perelman's failed fire insurance lawsuit and pulled out some buck wild condition reports for the five invisibly damaged paintings he wanted $410 million for. Here's the Twombly, for example greg.org/archive/2025...
one page of a court filing of a condition report for a 1971 cy twombly painting, the kind that would normally get called a blackboard painting, full of rows of loops, but this one is on a white ground, and yet ron perelman, its owner, never refers to it as a whiteboard painting. he says it's a masterpiece, in which case, cy twombly, who i admire greatly, had to have made hundreds of masterpieces, because this one seems fine. except it's inundated here with notations of various anomalies and damage sites and condition problems, tho none of them ended up being attributable enough to the fire at ron perelman's house, at least not enough for the judge.

This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".
One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested. Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away. House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.” Extinction Rebellion: how successful were the latest protests? He said: “The problem with them going floppy and four offices carrying them away [is that it] looks to the general public like police are overreacting here. We’re not making them go floppy.
