I was one of those unfamiliar. Fascinating (and scary!) how the myth has become so pervasive I'd accepted it as a scientific fact. But it all comes from poorly interpreted fMRI studies?? Oof. Anyway, I found this Slate article really informative, and it comes with many sources for further reading.
