When I worked at an ice cream shop in high school, older customers would frequently ask whether we carried black walnut. This was a Ben & Jerry's so I had to be like "No, I'm afraid not, but would you like to sample the Chunky Monkey?" They usually declined.
Betty Crocker Black Walnut Cake Mix (1958-circa 1965): A boxed cake mix for black walnut-flavored cakes. Black walnuts, noted for their more intense, bittersweet, earthy flavor, became a popular flavor for cake, ice cream, cookies, and candy during this era

Looks like the downtown mall has some competition.
I went to the Stonefield tree lighting tonight and was so impressed. There were so many kids and families there, and they even gave out free light-up glasses and necklaces etc. Had Elsa and Anna, Eli Cook, and even Santa. Free and family-oriented. We need more of that!

TRUMP [after spending 5 minutes with Zohran]: surplus value, it’s a very wonderful thing, very wonderful, and they’re stealing it. Can you believe that?

We’re going to be looking very strongly at the bourgeoisie, what they’re up to

I reckon you can learn a lot about the atmosphere in various Oxford colleges by looking at what they choose to name their cats (courtesy of @oxfordclarion.bsky.social ). We should all aspire to the energy of a Teabag, Isambard Kitten Brunel, or an Admiral Flapjack

I did my (not that great) master's thesis on US Christmas homemaking in the immediate post-WWII period. Hard follow.
My book on the social conservative shift in our Christmas media from the McCarthy era was just published on Monday, and I'm currently working on an op-ed on GAC.

I take a hard, hard stance that Christmas is as pluralistic as the American people and Christian traditions are only a small part of it.
Selling Out Santa: Hollywood Christmas Films in the Age of McCarthy, my new book exploring how Hollywood manipulated the Christmas holiday for socially conservative ends, is the perfect Christmas gift for film and history lovers, or the perfect Thanksgiving bomb to lob into conversation. Have at it!

Christmas is not just a day or a frame of mind as Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) imparts in Miracle on 34th Street (1947); Christmas is also a vehicle for national mythmaking as an idealising mirror for ...
