TIME SENSITIVE ACTION: Historically, organized labor has achieved gains that extend far beyond its own membership (ie limits on child labor, the 40-hour workweek). These gains depend on workers’ right to collective bargaining, a right that Virginia’s public sector employees currently do not have.

Spending a couple of hours reading through our Zoning Code chapter, and I’ve got to say…..this is not a riveting book 😅

In August, I’ll be 10 years sober. I was lucky to have access to treatment when I needed it in the Navy. But it shouldn’t be about luck. Every family in America deserves some help getting picked up when you trip.

I’m not sure there’s an idea in the world I believe in more strongly than YOU SHOULD DEFEND THE HUMANS IN YOUR COMMUNITY, which seems to echo what moral abscesses like PEG keep telling me, but their “community” is this abominable racial caste, and my community is just the people who I know around me

No one is above the law. That includes ICE. They hurt our Commonwealth and jeopardize the rule of law when they use our court spaces to terrorize and intimidate.

This should be the Democratic platform. Amnesty for everyone here and an orderly and humane immigration system that keeps people from sneaking across the border making securing it easier and more politically supported.

Today on Volts: you've probably heard that rooftop solar is 3X the price in the US that it is in Australia, because of "soft costs." How can we fix that? Today I get into the details of permitting & interconnection with two experts who have devoted their careers to bringing those soft costs down.
How to make rooftop solar power as cheap in the US as it is in Australia
Nick Josefowitz and Andrew Birch join me to explain how slashing red tape can bring Australian solar prices to the US.

Folks, I don't know about you, but after this storm I need to get out of the house and talk to cool, thoughtful people and generally have a good time. Luckily there's a perfect time & place for that: tomorrow, Thursday the 29th, at Bar Botanical in Crozet!
Crozetians! (And really all Albemarle/cville neighbors). We'll be hosting another Livable meetup at Bar Botanical next week, assuming the snows haven't completely shut central virginia down. Come chat about affordability & transit, make grand plans, connect with neighbors - a guaranteed good time.

Part of me wishes I had leaned more into my activist side when I ran, but I was definitely advised against it 💀.

But I returned a call to a constituent today about 🧊 and talked so long I had to call back and leave a second message 😅🫣. In my comments I mentioned getting pepper sprayed in 2024 🙃
Agreed. I think it's even worse: many politicians don't WANT people to do more than give money and vote. They don't want people calling them about issues, questioning their decisions. I strongly prefer politicians who come out of activism, actually care about things, and want to involve community.
100%. I honestly believe political leaders ask too little of people. The thinking is you need an extraordinarily low bar - so ask people for money or to sign something. People want to be part of something and they're eager to do real meaningful work in defense of their community and their rights.
