I am going to be doing a newsletter that is partially what I’m up to as a Supervisor and partly looking at and explaining what exactly local government does, and the introductory post is out now!

Scrolling with Sally Vol 1. No. 1
This is a little longer because it is the introductory post. My plan (which may be too ambitious) is to send these out every two weeks, along with occasional weekend Long Reads that are a concentrated...

A fact that sounds like bullshit but is actually true:

There is more square footage of parking *per car* in the US than there is square footage of housing *per person.*

Mike @mike-pruitt.bsky.social has been so incredibly helpful to me over the past year. I’m grateful I get to continue working with him, but this is a really lovely reflection on the importance of politics and serving people 🥺

“I will keep fighting to make hope a strength, not a liability, for families like mine.”

I told Mike that selfishly I’m glad he’s going to stay on BOS with me, because we have a lot of work to do.

And now it’s Story Time with Sally. The part of the show where Sally comes out and reads a little story.

Forgot to take any pictures but I had a great night tonight at our local Farm Bureau meeting. Learned more about farm stuff and talked a lot about the permitting and business process in the county, and it was very encouraging!

Commissioner King, Jack Jouett (appointed by @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social): thanks people for bringing up affordability. Re: property values, they're "increasing exponentially," and development like this helps reduce that and lower prices. Says "people cannot afford to live here."

I know I’ll have my say later, but I am very frustrated that there is a Crozet Master Plan with zoned density to support this. Very frustrating to create plans, have public input and create zoning, and then say “nope!” It is bad policy and operating in bad faith.
Commissioner says he supports density "at the cost of quality of life." He feels like this plan is undercooked, especially with respect to interconnectivity. He also thinks the density of the townhomes on the northern end is inappropriate. And he thinks the green space is "underutilized."

“Paris, long known for traffic jams and crowded boulevards, has rapidly transformed into a city defined by bikes. In just five years, cycling’s modal share in the French capital has more than doubled, rising from 5% to 11%…This surge didn’t happen by accident…” via @momentummag.bsky.social
What the world can learn from Paris’s cycling revolution
The Paris cycling change did not happen by accident. It was driven by political will, strategic use of data, and a willingness to rethink street space.

One thing I’ve learned is that there’s an official association of Virginia Counties and they sometimes like to advocate for bad policies! We need to get in the cart, and on the train, and get housing built near transit!

The Wall Street Journal just illustrated the core argument of my book: a system rigged to reward capital over labor is one in which even full-time work no longer secures the most basic material needs.

This is the economic order that produces the "working homeless."

I know I’ve said this before but @fievel42.bsky.social is such a fantastic member of our community. If you don’t catch them in the mornings on 106.1 you’re missing out. They just had a great speech on the benchless Union Station and the need to work for housing for our unhoused neighbors.

Absolutely forgot my goal was for this to be a weekend piece 🫠 but here is a long collection of links related to ICE resistance, community solidarity, and a bit about why I’m not inclined to support a formal resolution at the BOS level.

The more people that choose to walk, bike and ride public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for everyone, including drivers.

EVERYONE.

There’s no “war on cars,” just an opportunity for more successful cities.

You’re being lied to. It’s time we tell #TheTruthAboutTraffic.

Stinging dissent from Judge Dana Douglass (Obama appointee) who chillingly sums up the consequences. Over 2 million people including those who have resided in the country can be held without bond hearings. The court’s reading means “the border is everywhere.”
