Hey, I'm Lewis! I'm a weather/climate scientist and I write video game reviews and essays in my spare time 😊

I like games with interesting stories, movement systems and collectathons (especially creature collecting).

That's a finish on The Left Hand of Darkness. What an astounding book.

The depth with which othering and gender are explored - mostly through the use of just 2 characters - is astonishing. There are ideas and thoughts in here that are considered forward-thinking even today!

Highly recommend.

Hi there! 👋🏾

I'm really excited to finally share what I've been working on these past couple of months! I'm putting a lot of time and energy into crafting a definitive behind-the-scenes breakdown of all the Amnesia games for fans and newcomers alike.

Feel free to preorder if you're interested! 🕯️
Written by Toussaint Egan (@thesaintoftous.bsky.social) and designed by Callin Mackintosh, Amnesia: Design Works comes in both Standard and Deluxe Editions with around 200 pages of fascinating/frightening new secrets and behind-the-scenes concept art.

Existential risk to craft is not just about losing jobs, but about pressures to be "more productive or else" from people who don't understand or value quality in your craft.

are you interested in HOW people talk about games?

I have a podcast that is ALL OVER topics exactly like this one. I think if people listened to it they wouldn't make such embarrassing mistakes!!

Loved this game Nitroglycerine. It's a pastiche of Wages of Fear/Sorcerer. Feels like Roadcraft mixed with Bennett Foddy.

A challenging arcade simulator of transporting dangerous cargo on heavy trucks along a complex and unpredictable route. A short but extendable adventure.

My first post on Bluesky! This is a short video from our game Dome, which we’re currently developing. The game is still in its early phase. Hopefully, someone will see this post >.<

100% agree. I saw similar complaints crop up about references to microsoft in reviews of Outer Wilds 2.

If game's are to be taken as art, as they should be, then recognising that "you get out what you bring" is crucial to engaging with them.

And what is brought differs for everyone.
once a week i have to repeat some version of "meaning is created between text and the reader. Everyone is bringing something from "outside the game" into their review. That's just context."

but the people will never understand

Biped 2 is a co-op puzzle platformer that doesn't really stick the landing - struggling with 3d space and not feeling like a truly cooperative experience.

Don't think I ever posted this one, but I'm really happy with how this photo turned out. I was practising freezing faster motion at a distance (I don't have the steadiest hands generally 😅)

I'm shooting my first concert on monday - absolutely terrified. But making the shot list is incredibly satisfying, so that's currently winning out!

I try so hard to be measured and realistic with these, but Bloodborne actually turns me into a crazed fanatic - maybe this is the one, no matter how unlikely!!
PlayStation has announced a State of Play for later tonight, so surely we are going to get some Bloodborne news... right?! www.eurogamer.net/playstation-...

Hit credits on Ghost of Yotei this evening - the ending was okay.

I think it's a perfectly fine open world video game - that is, it does all the things you expect and does pretty well (sometimes exceptionally - voice acting) at them.

Maybe we can get a new infamous game now that this is finished

I've been watching my partner play through Hades 2's new ending bits and ya know, I can't say it makes that much more sense with all the new stuff.

It's still pretty messy, but I do appreciate some of the additional context either way.

... but it doesn't belong in the same convo for a good number of reasons. And what is that convo anymore? I think no one knows for sure. We should just play more games and abolish ratings, I think.

It's a GOTY issue generally - how games are compared and evaluated as art against one another. But that's a tough issue to tackle.

Indie doesn't really mean anything anymore, and beyond personal categorisation, I don't know if it helps to separate them into a separate space when talking about GOTY.

Thought more about "Indie" as a term since yesterday. Specifically in reference to GOTY and anything other than categorisation

Indie at TGA often feels a little bit like animation at The Oscars. A delineation that suggests one as in a different class to the other. (You get exceptions, of course)

Watched Frankenstein. Didn't really like Frankenstein very much - really disappointed, honestly. Jacob Elordi was great, though.

If you like the genre, seeking out reviews that come at the game from a perspective similar to yours ("is this game good for somebody that likes the genre") is useful to you.

If you don't like the genre, reviews by someone who doesn't will offer value to you - maybe this game changes that, right?
do people really think reviewing a video game is the same thing as reviewing a refrigerator?

Can we measure the objective qualities of a video game against other similar products? Can we do a price/value breakdown? Should every video game review reveal the same collected data?
What is the purpose of a review? Is it not to inform whether something is worth you spending money/time on? Whether it’s a movie, a videogame or a saucepan that ought to be the goal, right? Would it be worthwhile getting the opinions of somebody who doesn’t cook about a $300 saucepan?
