Looking forward to my copy arriving! Wrote the chapter on Vancouver with @bushfield.ca.
Santa came early this year and I just received my copy of City Politics in Canada, edited by Martin Horak, @jacklucas.bsky.social and @bigcitypolitics.bsky.social. I wrote the chapter on Ottawa (dedicated to the late Caroline Andrew).

At our October 18 No Tyrants rally, @bushfield.ca of @bchumanist.ca said, “We can’t look south and be smug and complacent. These same forces are at work right here in Canada.”

This is what he was talking about.

Great work Calgary. You really showed those dreamers who thought the ideological centre of neoconservativism in Canada was the place where there should be fewer government restrictions on home construction.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

not sure how to square ‘no one person can be reasonably expected to pay for every media subscription’ with ‘sorely underpaid writers need to make a living’ but my inclination is not to locate that problem with any of the broke ass people on either end of the complaint

Pay attention that not all your favourite writers/creators are as principled as Dave.
When I criticize the Liberal government in any way at all, no matter how reasonable, my free and paid subscribers on Substack go down. This dynamic creates a perverse incentive, which I refuse to give in to.

But this is a major problem.

it is MIRACULOUS that we got rid of lead paint and asbestos when we did. if we had tried that today, there would be people whining about how we're restricting their rights.

I explained the latest drama in #bcpoli to someone who isn't as political and their response was that it sounds like such an old white man move to refuse to resign.
I'm honestly disappointed. His obstinance was an inspiration to everyone who refused to read the writing on the wall, the room or the signs. Or to even listen to the growing chorus yelling at you to quit. We should all get to be so stubborn.
December 4, 2025 at 5:27 PM
The statement is raising questions already answered by the statement
Fixed statement was just released and it contains this line from Rustad, which nearly made me spit out my coffee:
"I know many are concerned by what they saw yesterday, but I want to assure every member and supporter of the party that this was not a hostile takeover by BC Liberals of the party."
December 4, 2025 at 5:26 PM
I was really hoping John Rustad would stick it out. In the era of quiet quitting, we need someone to loudly not quit.
