NEW: No, Charlie Kirk was not practicing politics the right way. That's what Ezra Klein said. We can condemn this heinous assassination but also recognize that with his 2020 election denialism and extremist rhetoric, Kirk built his movement with falsehoods and in a wrong and divisive manner.

His assassination deserves full condemnation; his full impact should not be sidestepped.

I'm retiring the Browns as my No. 1 team until Jimmy and Dee Haslam are no longer owners. I wish I could say it's been a fun last 35 years, but it hasn't. I'll still wish for the Browns players to succeed, but between this and the Watson trade, I'm done. www.cleveland.com/open/2024/10...
Browns owners among biggest donors in effort to stop anti-gerrymandering issue
Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam each contributed $50,000 toward the effort to stop Issue 1, a constitutional amendment that would put citizens in charge of redistricting in Ohio.

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

part of why white supremacists & the wider right have worked so hard to falsely frame immigration as an "invasion," & why it has manufactured propaganda about a "great replacement," is to create the pretext for precisely this: an authoritarian government that gets to decide who it gets to disappear
Stephen Miller: "The writ of habeas corpus can be suspended in a time of invasion. So I would say that's an option we're actively looking at."

Mass classification of people is a critical framing genocidal logics require. A tool to do so need not be very accurate, it only needs to convince people it is accurate enough, at least enough to allow them to enact policy of harm.

Genocide is a policy.

The biggest thing we need to do is let people know that the protests are FUN. Yelling fuck the man is fun. You will meet fun people.

We also need to make them more fun. Bring grills like the French. Bring instruments like it’s Mardi Gras. Give people a reason to spend their weekend in the streets.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

To return to what we talking about earlier, a lot of men have this dual need to both absolve AI for any errors (as you say, infantilising it) & also apotheosise AI as essentially divine. I can only explain it as a desperate self-delusion, like creating a clockwork messiah.
