Great stuff as always from Kieron. I'm with him in wanting mechanics that intersect with the game, and setting not being enough unless mechanics also support it. I don't want rules that get out of the way, I want rules that get in the way in interesting and productive ways.

Great stuff as always from Kieron. I'm with him in wanting mechanics that intersect with the game, and setting not being enough unless mechanics also support it. I don't want rules that get out of the way, I want rules that get in the way in interesting and productive ways.

Just played a cracking game of @meghanlynnftw.bsky.social and @superdillin.bsky.social 's HUNT(er/ed) with @omnihedron.co.uk as a royal vampiric monster I was tailing - this game absolutely slaps, 1 hour of high tension duet action (that didn't end well for my hunter) meghanlynnftw.itch.io/huntered

Update - just played it again, vampires again - this time in the modern day. Such a terrific duet game.
Noodling around about adapting @cavegirl.bsky.social 's Depth Crawl structure (Stygian Library, Gardens of Ynn) into a smaller, tighter D4+Level system - are there any other examples of Depth Crawls on this smaller scale? ( @oldscouserp.bsky.social you may have some ideas?)

Lots of differenr TTRPGs from different design spheres and play cultures. Better, of course, if you *play* them - ideally with lots of different GMs, players, etc. So, conventions or online communities.

This is right on the money - #TTRPG prep is part of the game, and you should be prepping even for the most improv-heavy sessions; it doesn't have to be a slog; it should be a joy!
Prep isn’t the villain some make it out to be. Like most things in this hobby, it only gets muddied when personal frustrations get turned into universal “truths.” Preparation’s not the problem, you’re doing it the moment you agree to run a game.

For balance, if a game *must* have chargen, there are a few that make it quick and fun - PBTA/FITD playbooks, Daggerheart, Year Zero Engine, ... Some are even more fun than the game itself (Traveller)

Since this post got some traction, its worth me restating that I think character generation in TTRPGs is MASSIVELY overrated - every game should come with ready-to-run PCs (with its starter/example adventure!)
How long does chargen actually take? I just made an Orlanthi Warrior for @chaosium.bsky.social Runequest Glorantha.... 27 minutes. I can see why every con game I see uses the pregens!
