Important update Thanks to the sheer volume of citizens raising their voices in opposition, the Danish Presidency has been forced to update its Chat Control compromise text to include the following recital:
 "(17a) Nothing in this Regulation should be understood as imposing any detection obligations on providers." 
 The final proposal 15318/25 containing recital 17a is now heading for Coreper (Committee of Permanent Representations). Once approved, the position formally adopted by Council will thus exclude mandatory scanning. Council is expected to officially adopt its position the 18th or 19th. We should then expect trilogue to commence. Next steps While this presents a “quick fix” in response to public pressure that legally is not a good solution, it is a much better position than before and one that can be worked with. The multiple flaws and inconsistencies that remain (e.g. mandatory age verification effectively outlawing anonymous communication and planned “voluntary” mass scanning) can be amended during trilogue with the European Parliament. While Danish Minister of Justice and Chief Architect of Chat Control Peter Hummelgaard, and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, are likely to attempt an expedited process, a deal is unlikely to be reached in December. They will likely try to complete the deal in Q1 of 2026. As negotiations commence, contact your MEPs and let them know how you would like them to vote and protect your codified rights to privacy.

Damn, this is like historical vandalism. There are wonderful creators on YouTube who died years ago and it's amazing to be able to go back to their untouched channels, which are now like a monument to them. For YT to retroactively tinker with their videos is pretty repulsive.

Youtube has announced that all low-res videos (i.e. older ones) are to be automatically AI upscaled to HD.
Creators can opt-out on a per video basis (but the channel may be long abandoned).

When researching props or behind the scenes, old videos are useful, but not if upscaling produces artefacts.

This is incorrect.

1. The opt-out for creators is channel-wide, not per-video. It's available in YouTube Studio right now.
2. The low-res versions aren't going away. YouTube will automatically generate multiple upscaled copies, but you can still choose to view the 144p/240p versions if you want.
Turn visual & audio quality enhancement settings on or off 1. Sign in to YouTube Studio & on your computer. 2. Click Settings I > Channel › Advanced settings. 3. Check or uncheck the Let YouTube enhance visual quality box. 4. Check or uncheck the Let YouTube enhance audio quality box. 5. Click Save. Menu of video resolutions from 144p and 240p resolution to 480p-1080p "super resolution"

one of the most annoying things about youtube is non-optional auto-translation of everything on a page to your selected language and defaulting auto-dubbing to "on". It's practically a low-key insistence that no other languages exist. anyway I tried this extension to stop that bs n it seems to work

They are also intentionally conflating machine-learning and generative AI slop to confuse and try to make GenAI seem necessary. Google Maps traffic stuff is machine learning, not GenAI, for example. Auto-correct is too. Don't let them make you lose the thread. GenAI slop is slop.
