BOTD: Scott Bradley (1891-1977) who wrote music for the MGM cartoon shorts of the Golden Age.
Bradley was an accomplished composer who felt that music for cartoons was a true art form.
I consider his work equal to that of Carl Stalling, his better known contemporary at Warner Bros

Remembering composer James Horner (1953-2015) on what would have been his 72nd birthday.
A career cut short by tragedy, Horner wrote the scores for over 100 films, earning two Oscars and working closely with the biggest names in Hollywood from the 1980's to the 2010's.

My notes on Death and Transfiguration by Richard Strauss are in tonight's #bbcproms programme. It's a piece as much about life as about death, as you'd expect from a young composer - his essential joie de vivre shines through even the most chilling moments. Looking forward to tuning in.
With his lush and gleaming orchestration, Richard Strauss expanded the scale of the ‘tone poem’ (a self-contained, programmatic orchestral work). Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration) was Strauss’s fourth tone poem, written when he was still in his mids-20s. His decision to compose tone poems was influenced by his fellow musician Alexander Ritter who, at Strauss’s request, wrote a poem relating the narrative arc of Death and Transfiguration in response to the completed score. Strauss himself outlined his vision for Death and Transfiguration in 1895, explaining that the work’s protagonist is ‘a person who had striven for the highest ideals, therefore very possibly an artist’. This ailing man ‘lies in a bed asleep, breathing heavily and irregularly; agreeable dreams charm a smile on his features in spite of his suffering; his sleep becomes lighter; he wakens; once again he is wracked by terrible pain, his limbs shake with fever’. The man sees before him ‘the idea, the Ideal that he has tried to realise, to represent in his art, but which he has been unable to perfect because it was not for any human being to perfect it. The hour of death approaches, the soul leaves the body, in order to find perfected in the most glorious form, in the eternal cosmos, that which he could not fulfil here on earth.’ Strauss was an atheist, but he was fascinated by the idea of art as a transformative power; of rebirth through death. Death and Transfiguration has been interpreted as a reflection of these views, representing the demise of one kind of German music following Wagner’s death, and its transformation in the hands of Strauss himself. An even more personal reading of the work is that Strauss was letting go of the childhood influence of his musician father and embracing new role-models such as Ritter. Yet Strauss himself warned against overthinking the meaning behind the music... 40 years later, with typically dry wit, he claimed that the work was ‘purely a product of the imagination – it is not based on any kind of personal experience … It was an idea just like any other, probably ultimately the musical need … to write a piece that begins in C minor and finishes in C major!’ The work’s illustrative effects have been much imitated since but were highly innovative at the time, and the first performance, in 1890, was a triumph. In the opening Largo (The sick man, near death), faltering rhythms evoke the man’s irregular breathing and erratic heartbeat, over which a sighing theme emerges. Solo woodwinds, violin and harp create a heavenly atmosphere, and having established the conflict between these elements, Strauss ratchets up the tension in the tossing and turning of the Allegro molto agitato (The battle between life and death offers no respite to the man). After a searing climax – when the ‘transfiguration theme’ is heard for the first time – we reach the ‘Meno mosso’ section (‘The dying man’s life passes before him’). Feverish memories jostle until we hear the six-note ‘transfiguration theme’ in full. The opening ideas return as the man’s lifeblood ebbs away; the frenzied music signals a final surge of pain; a haunting upwards scale and spine-chilling tam-tam indicate the moment of release. In the final Moderato (The sought-after transfiguration), Strauss weaves together earlier ideas into a stately funeral march that is slowly transformed into a serene procession. The ‘transfiguration theme’, free of dissonant interruptions, becomes a kind of hymn, building to a climax before fading to a radiant close. In his valedictory Four Last Songs, Strauss quoted the ‘transformation theme’ as the soprano sings: ‘Is this perhaps death?’ The music and his mortality had become inextricably connected. As he admitted to his daughter-in-law while on his deathbed: ‘It’s a funny thing, Alice, but dying is just the way I composed it in Tod und Verklärung.’

Very much enjoyed reviewing this new release for Gramophone. Bloch's wonderful Suite for Viola and Orchestra works very well in the transcription for cello heard here, and the performances by Parry Karp and Kenneth Woods are superb. Great to see the recording picked as an Editor's Choice.
