It all started spiraling down the drain when we lost Bowie. I’m glad he remains relevant and meaningful today. But I sure do miss him.

Swearing IN, swearing AT…
After 7 l-o-n-g weeks, wishing Arizona Congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva, who is the 158th & final vote to release the EPSTEIN Files, a wonderful Swearing-In Day, although not everyone is all that happy about it.

Quite a chunk of my writing centers on an idealized small rural community where people are decent to each other, mind their own business, don't waste energy on being judgmental, and dump a huge amount of money into education for the kids.

How dare some former Somalian know the U.S. Constitution? Honestly, the nerve of her! Next thing you know, she'll be saying the U.S. is some kind of "melting pot," and owes a lot of its resilience to immigrants…
Trump on Ilhan Omar: "I look at somebody who comes from Somalia...and she comes in and tells us how to run our country. 'The Constitution says this, the Constitution says that.' The whole thing is crazy."

That'd work, if the party had anything like a spine. As they keep proving over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over, they're more interested in "maintaining the status quo," whatever that is this week, than they are in implementing changes we all need.
This is actually good spin, or would have been. But the fact that the Democratic cave happened without even a coordinated, agreed-upon message like this indicates the depth of the leadership void.

No, actually, "Americans" are not in conflict over any of that. An extremely vocal, backward, obstreperous MINORITY are angry about what all the rest of us want, and they try to pitch the narrative that they speak for all — or even as much as half — when in fact they do not.
Americans are in conflict over policies for health care, housing, immigration, and the role of religion in society. Walter Isaacson on why a key sentence in the Declaration of Independence could help restore stability to our politics:
The Ideal That Underlies the Declaration of Independence
Restoring stability to American politics will require reviving an age-old concept: common ground.

I reject the idea that the most the American people can demand of the Democratic Party is blocking bad things the Republican Party wants to do.

People want good jobs, safe & affordable housing, healthcare, a savings account, and the ability to live a good life.

Don’t settle.

Where it's been force-deployed (MS and Adobe), users have overwhelmingly rejected it, as in 95% don't use it. Apple has been very slow in adopting it, for which they were derided — but more and more, that seems like a canny business move. This bubble will burst, catastrophically.
Good morning! AI is being force-fed to you by a handful of billionaires who will lose a bunch of money if they fail to convince you that you need it. You do not need it 🫶

I think the eeriest part of the video from that event was how he visibly checked out and shut down, leading to that stonefaced moment. It’s like his software crashed and he went into some kind of default “stand and await reboot/further instructions” mode.

Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.

"As of now, porn still accounts for more than a third of internet data transfers."

I think we can do better than that, no?

Seriously, though, this is worth the 5-10 minutes; it's about more than a new platform.

The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

Am I the only one wishing the Sandwich Guy's first name was Earl?
Good morning! Day 4 of the Sandwich Guy’s trial. He is finally wearing a suit (the rest of the week’s evidence suggests he seems to prefer pullovers in cooler weather). The jury has a note for the judge.

B-but … data centers! Overhyped chatbots with unfixable inherent tendencies to fail are the wave of the future! The Nvidia guy said so! Why would he lie, just because his entire business model relies on selling outrageously expensive and power-hungry video processors?
Donald Trump promised to cut electricity costs in HALF by 2026.

But new data shows that electricity costs have actually gone UP by 11% since he took office.

Another Trump lie that's costing American families.

Yes. Tabs are the work of Satan in this, the third decade of the 21st century.

Also, pro tip: Double-spacing after periods went out with the IBM Selectric.
#Scrivener 3 on Windows & Mac Tip of the Day: Use your ruler (‘View > Text Editing > Show Ruler’) to set up paragraph indents rather than tabs.
