By the way: American friends, if no one stands up to this kind of behavior on the part of Trump, it means all your checks and balances and thus your democracy are gone.
Trump now says he'll impose a 10% tariff (rising to 25% in June) on some of our closest allies until the US can buy Greenland.

It's long past time for Congress to put an end to this.

Greenland and Denmark have both made clear: Greenland is not for sale and its sovereignty and territorial integrity needs to be respected. No threat of tariffs can or will change that fact.

The EU supports Denmark and the people of Greenland. We do so united in resolve.

The measures against NATO allies announced today will not help in ensuring security in the Arctic. They risk the opposite, emboldening our joint enemies & those who wish to destroy our common values & way of life.

These are not "normal" trade tariffs.
For the first time, US economic pressure on Europe is explicitly tied to brutal political demands: surrender territory or face economic punishment.
This is a historic test for Europe.

Aside from this being incorrect - the underlying rule on sovereignty and statehood is the Montevideo Convention, which doesn’t imply defence capabilities - this is illuminating on what is now pseudo-official U.S. policy: any territory you cannot defend is fair game for someone else
Miller: Denmark is a tiny country with a tiny economy and a tiny military. They cannot defend Greenland… Under every understanding of law that has existed about territorial control for 500 years, to control a territory you have to be able to defend a territory…
