This absurdity was obvious even in 2016.

Republicans blocked Obama from filling Scalia’s vacant seat. Even John McCain said they should refuse to fill it if Clinton won, effectively reverse court-packing.

That same year, Republicans packed the state courts in Arizona and Georgia. Now it’s Utah too
Pretty wild to me how many pundits and academics treated Republican opposition to the notion of Supreme Court expansion during the Biden administration as a serious, principled stance, as opposed to a position Republicans would obviously abandon the moment it became convenient
Republicans Love Supreme Court Expansion When It Gets Them What They Want
When it comes to state supreme courts, Republican politicians have been happy to add (or subtract) justices as they see fit.

Utah is the third state in the past decade where Republicans have packed their supreme court.

Arizona and Georgia Rs did it in 2016 to secure right-wing majorities.

North Carolina Rs tried it in 2018 to prevent the Dem court from overturning their gerrymanders, but voters rejected their power grab
This hasn’t received nearly enough attention:

Republicans just passed a law to pack Utah’s Supreme Court after it ruled against their congressional gerrymander.

Cox could appoint two more justices before the court hears the GOP’s latest appeal to preserve their gerrymander
Utah governor signs bill adding justices to state Supreme Court as redistricting appeal looms
Once the new seats are filled, Gov. Spencer Cox will have appointed five of the seven justices.

Trump openly admitting FBI raid in Fulton County was a prelude to interfering with the midterms and attempting to seize control of state and local voting process
Trump: "These people were brought to our country to vote, & they vote illegally. The Republicans should say, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places. The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting. We have states that I won that show I didn't win. You're gonna see something in Georgia"

We will never stop America’s slide into authoritarianism if one political party plays hardball, while the other refuses to.

Utah Republicans are expanding their state Supreme Court to stop abortion rights and nonpartisan gerrymandering. The GOP did this in GA and AZ too.

Dem response: crickets

Utah Republicans just sent a bill to the governor to expand the state Supreme Court.

National Democrats better remember this when they’re back in power. #ExpandSCOTUS
The Utah Senate has passed a bill that would expand the state supreme court by 2 seats (to be filled by the GOP governor).

This comes as local conservatives are angry about judicial decisions in Utah, inc. one that safeguarded direct democracy in 2024 & one that struck down their gerrymander.

Senator John Fetterman won't vote NO on ICE/DHS funding if it's still attached to other spending bills moving through the Senate.

His statement -- channeling Susan Collins -- expresses deep, genuine, passionate concern. But he won't do anything about it.

No one in America — citizen or not — is safe if DHS and ICE can roam the streets with guns and impunity.

SCOTUS decision days don’t have to be filled with dread and anxiety. 😰

The Supreme Court could be a force for justice and equality under the law. Shocking thought, I know.

But it will require Congress to reform the Court: term limits, a code of ethics, and expanding the court after Trump is gone.

In 2016 and 2024, Trump railed against endless foreign wars and regime change.

That’s partly why he won.

But now he’s been captured and converted by DC-based neoconservatives who want America to run the world.

This is not what the American people voted for.

And then let’s have that family conversation, in earnest.
