I don't have any scary stories to share for Halloween, but I do have a ghost story! "Handsomest Gentlest" is about the flaming-eyed fiend who stalks the forest of the dead. It's also a story about a boy and his dog. I have been told that it might make you sad. 🖤

ok. i am about to get sentimental on main.

The Iron Garden Sutra is going to be out in like...4 months, and i have complicated feelings. i love sci-fi. i grew up reading it and now i'm writing it (yay!). but it feels like the genre is shrinking except for the well-established heavy hitters.

Okay, hold on. Give me a second. I know this. I wrote it. It has a plot and things to say. I just need to think about how to explain it in under four hours of rambling tangents so I don't scare you away

One of the things I enjoyed most about studying Victorian lit in college was how these people would read each other for filth in the most roundabout ways. And "My Sincere Apologies For the Demon" by @adrianwardwrites.bsky.social puts me exactly in that mindset. I LAUGHED so many times here. Read it!

it was about an adventurer who finds a bunch of turtles stacked on top of each other endlessly into the sky. all these turtles want help removing whatever's on top of them, so the adventurer climbs up this tower of turtles, which get increasingly larger, until he reaches one too big to climb--
I was thinking about early writing recently and I'm curious—short fiction writers: what is the earliest short story you remember finishing that wasn't for a school project or anything?
