So this ad revenue metric is indicative of such a fascinating and weird set of business decisions by Google to inexplicably kill of SEO-- and I honestly don't get how they think this is going to pay off for them in the long run.

Excellent thread. The NY Times already looks terrible in this story, and somehow they manage to sustain that terrible image.
I’m going to be honest with you: The headline is appalling, but the piece, which indeed has an absolutely bizarre tone of nostalgia, is worse.

I legitimately think this article misses the mark, because Canadians are not avoiding travel out of some principled boycott of the USA over tariffs.

Canadians who are avoiding the USA are seeing images of masked government thugs kidnapping people and teargassing children.

Griffin’s definition of fascism as palingenetic ultranationalism—specifically a reactionary nostalgia for a lost history of the nation that never existed—remains undefeated. A nostalgia for a type of bread that is ubiquitous, created in the 20th century, and rage towards bread as old as civilisation

When I see people on here unknowingly join moral panics around child safety and technology, I think about how the future of this very platform hangs in the balance of this legislation that is designed to force us back onto big tech platforms. It’s not about the kids. It’s about all of us
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

This is an excellent subscription for film lovers - the recent newsletter on Jaws 50th anniversary was a terrific mix of smart insights and joyful enthusiasm.
New SHINY THINGS just dropped, featuring two exceptional new 4K releases from @criterion.bsky.social . Have you subscribed to SHINY THINGS yet, by the way? Because that would be nice.

Happy 2025 = 45², the first “square” year since 1936, the next being 2116. Its digit sum is also a square: 2+0+2+5 = 9 = 3². This last happened in 1681 and next occurs in 2304. And not since 900 has the year divided by the digit sum been a square too: 900/9=100 = 10² & 2025/9=225 = 15² QED. 👀🎉😁
