I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

the birthrate discussion I think always circles around a core reality that nobody really wants to talk about, which is that - when living in a stable society that does not rely on your family needing more children for support - most people don’t want many kids and no incentives will change that

One reason things like a universal pre-K announcement don't 'fit' these stories: the anxiety is tied to this nativist imaginary of "our" [non-immigrant] mothers who'll stay at home to raise the children — if that's your ideal, left responses to people's concerns about having a child are irrelevant.
