As with (much smaller) Delta raids in Libya a decade ago to capture Benghazi attackers, there were likely FBI HRT agents attached to do the actual arrest.

The idea that protecting those FBI agents was the legal justification under Article II for bombing a bunch of air defense sites seems…novel.

So how long do you think Delcy Rodriguez lasts?

I think an internal power struggle ousts her before the year is out, but I’m wrong quite a bit and not an expert on Venezuelan politics so take that gut instinct with a grain of salt

Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss is trying to get another year from the NCAA.

If he can't, though, the former DII sensation is going to be a really intriguing draft prospect. If this roll continues, maybe even a day two guy.

as the initial shock and outrage settles in to a sort of humming rage you can start to appreciate how shambolic this thing is. fentanyl declared a wmd, indictment for cocaine and guns, command center monitoring twitter, trump saying we're occupying somehow remotely(?) and paying for it with oil

I’d wager several deals were cut to snatch Maduro so (relatively) easily, but I’m not sure if that translates into a pliant regime in Caracas in the near term

But was it pitched as such to Trump? Maybe.

So much of American history is just impulsive and extremely stupid elites, who don't believe in consequences because they have never personally experienced them, doing highly consequential stuff because they're bored or believe it might make them richer. I guess a lot of our culture, too.

“We are in a period of shock before the Venezuelan military decides on a response. That is a vacuum that will be filled by American triumphalism. I listened to CNN talking heads praise the spectacular tactical success of the kidnapping, as if the U.S.' military capability was the relevant issue.”

Rodriguez appeared alongside other members of the PSUV cabinet, including Diosdado Cabello, Tarek William Saab, and Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

Rodriguez: "We are ready to defend Venezuela. We are ready to defend our natural resources, which should aid our national development"

Rodriguez does not sound like she's willing to be a US puppet, which is what Trump suggested earlier today.

Incredibly successful tactical operation, probably a huge strategic blunder though

Rodriguez's main messages were that Maduro is still President of Venezuela, and that the government will not yield to the US' attempt to take over its oil resources.

Again, no indication at all that she's collaborating with Washington, which Trump indicated was the case earlier today.
