Back in 2022 we endorsed Measure M, the city vacancy tax, specifically because of the “pernicious” way that Prop 13 allows landlords to hold on to vacant properties. We’re glad to see it having an impact!

Really good to see CM O’Keefe working this. We endorsed her opponent primarily on street policy but liked what O’Keefe said on housing. And here she’s walking the walk.
CM O'Keefe says she's not here for the vibes; she's here because she loves this city, and she wants it to grow, and welcome new people in. She's supporting the ordinance tonight.

theres an obvious age divide at the middle housing at #berkmtg and a parent came in to oppose ending single-family zoning and then their yimby son came in and said "Im here to refute my parents" lmao

A number of speakers have quoted a median home price of $1.7m. But that’s the median for all home types - the median for single family homes was $1.8m in May…

Alfred seems to be live posting tonight’s meeting on middle housing!
Middle Housing rezoning goes to #Berkeley city council vote tonight.

Big question is how many homes per lot.

Will it be a handful of large 2,000 sq ft+ houses, or will a larger number of smaller starter homes or flats also be allowed.

For best results we want flexibility for either. 1/

My oped on why Berkeley should pass Middle Housing and why you must comment on Thursday either in person or on Zoom. Its the final vote!

Is Berkeley finally ready to atone for its single-family housing sins?
OPINION: “Berkeley can show America that beautiful density for non-rich families ... is better than the suburban sprawl that the city popularized over a century ago,” Darrell Owens writes.
