Terrific piece by @mehdirhasan.bsky.social for @theguardian.com.

The country desperately needs congressional Democrats to get their shit together, and it needs to happen sooner rather than later.

This week on #TheProfessorIsIn, we dig into official economic statistics. What are they? Why does the government provide them? Why there's a trade-off between accuracy, timeliness, and cost. And why it's so important that these numbers be produced free of political interference. youtu.be/oSbnv2drRkA

I was just in Japan for two weeks, and learned a lot from talking Japanese policy wonks about the "strategic ambiguity" at the heart of the US-Japan trade deal, and what this reveals is -- and isn't -- in a number of the President's "deals."

I don't think most Americans realize how hard tariffs are about to hit them. The combination of 1) escalating tariffs, 2) companies slowly passing the cost to consumers, and 3) the repeal of the de minimis exemption in the Big Beautiful Bill, a lot stuff will be more expensive in 2027.

It's not a bad idea to go to the local Walmart or big box retailer and buy lots of consumables now. From toothpaste to soap, anything you can find storage space for, buy before they have to replenish inventory.

Even if it's made in the USA , they will jack up the price and blame it on tariffs.

One thing Democratic leadership could do right now is to name an alternate HHS secretary--someone to provide ongoing public updates and health information. And do it for other departments too. Start showing voters what a Democratic government would look like--press conferences, speeches, all of it.
