My career in #CAWater is almost old enough to drink legally. My work in #CALeg and #CAAg is still in elementary school.

I’m the worst at social media snooping because my thumbs are undisciplined. Sorry, I looked at your pics from all the way back in 2011 and now you know.

I didn’t agree with some of Vice President Cheney’s decisions, but he and his boss never seemed to govern with open contempt for America and vast swaths of its population, which in 2025 is notable.

You do not often see the Speaker of the CA State Assembly and the President of the California Farm Bureau coauthoring opinions. That this moment has called for it underlines the unusual times we are in.
🎁 article. "Nearly every crop has a precise window for optimal harvest. When that window is missed, crops become undesirable to retailers, resulting in food waste and higher costs. CNN reported on an Oregon cherry farm with 30 acres of unpicked, rotting fruit...a loss of ~$250K as a result."

“Scaring immigrant farmworkers and depleting the agricultural work force will weaken an industry that has been one of our nation’s strengths since its founding. These workers are not strangers, and they’re not a burden on California or the nation.” 👏 www.nytimes.com/2025/08/25/o...

There’s a lot of agreement in the ag community that we need a quicker off-ramp for landowners with Williamson Act contracts and chronically unavailable water supplies. The question is how to keep it narrow enough that it doesn’t unravel the act’s needed protections in other areas.
Once again, a bill in California would make it easier for farmers to convert their land to solar power. Once again, lawmakers might yield to Big Ag and say "no."

My column on the enduring power of the Williamson Act, and some Colorado River stuff too: www.latimes.com/environment/...
Commentary: California needs a little less farmland, a lot more solar power
It's an easy climate solution. But really, there's no such thing.

Last July 2024, we marked the first 5 years of the SAFER program, launched after Governor Newsom signed SB 200 in 2019; we are building on the progress we’ve made so far to accelerate access to safe drinking water for all Californians.
