This guy is probably nostalgic for a bygone era where you could visit "Germantown", "Swedenville", and "Little Italy" because it was so great how those people stuck together and held onto their heritage, not realizing that it is the same thing that is happening today, and it is wonderful now too.

“It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”

Luke 17:2 KJV

And that’s red letter text, by the way.

I am very lucky to be able to go biking through the boreal forest and on the frozen surface of the 10th largest lake in the world.

Lake Winnipeg is spectacular!

Agreed. Normally I am a strong supporter of city centre train stations, but the O-Train connection from downtown to Tremblay Station (i.e. Via) is actually great.

Unless it were a through-station that solved other issues, bringing Via trains back to Rideau doesn't seem necessary.

Any all inclusives in Antarctica? I'd like to get away from this cold.

The other day we ordered supper from Gojo, an amazing Ethiopian restaurant near us on Sargent. Everything was fantastic!

But it was this bright green, super spicy sauce that smells and tastes strongly of garlic and cilantro that I loved the most. It's called Kochkocha, and it's wonderful.

We watched The Princess Bride with the kids for the first time last night.

They absolutely loved it, and the breakfast conversation this morning is basically nothing but quotes from the movie.
two men are talking and one of them is saying " you keep using that word i do not think it means what you think it means

You know, @ryankturnbull.bsky.social, the path to a career in the Anglican Church can be quite varied.
If you're looking for a sign to switch careers: this is the sign.

Now that I've started winter biking, it looks like I'm going to die of heat exhaustion this afternoon.

I dressed for the cold this morning, and this afternoon not only will it be hot, I'll be pedalling hard into the 30-50 km/h headwind. Yay.

I don't even know what to say. This is beyond anything I thought I'd see in my lifetime.
This is surreal. 4 Oglala Lakota men kidnapped by ICE in Minneapolis have finally been located. One of them was released but the other 3 are being held at Fort Snelling, a former concentration camp used to imprison Native people incl. the Dakota 38 during Dakota Wars.

Not the best photo, but I went on a bike ride this evening on the frozen rivers and through The Forks in Winnipeg. There are several kilometres of skating trails, with a plowed/groomed walk/bike path beside it all the way along.

The Forks does a great job with festive lights to make it feel magical

I remember reading once that US adults always long for the community they had at university, because so many of them go away to school in college towns, and it's the only time they ever live in dense, walkable, transit-friendly communities.

It's too bad this isn't a goal for all urban areas.
Here are the 20 US urban areas that had the highest per-capita transit ridership in 2024.

New York, unsurprisingly, dominated. Among the big urban areas, the other leaders were SF, DC & Boston.

A lot of small towns—like Ames, IA or Champaign, IL—did well, too. That's because they're college towns!

How does the new routing into the airport play into this? Would the airport become a through station where trains from Chicago enter the airport using the new tracks, leave the airport using the "old" tracks, and continue onward to South Bend Union Station?

Is that even possible?
