Biology is so cool!!!

I fully used to believe that "man flu" was simply due to patriarchy - that women sucked it up because they had to keep being moms/caregivers, while men were just being whiny

Then I personally experienced it myself after starting T. It's so real!!

Abortion access, gender affirming care, and access to Prep and AIDS medications are all issues of bodily autonomy and founded in legitimate medical research

But that doesn't matter to fascists. Enforcing strict gender binaries and destroying science maintains power among a few cishet wealthy men
Vance just announced that “organizations receiving U.S. non-military funding will not be able to work on abortion, DEI and issues related to transgender people, even if that work is done with other funding sources”.

Another egregious decision by the administration that will cause great harm.
Vance announces aid restrictions for groups that promote diversity, transgender policies abroad
The move expands a longstanding Republican policy that restricted U.S. funding for organizations working on or promoting abortion overseas.

"Biological sex" is theological sex. Religion cannot act openly in the UK as it can in the USA.

Also the project and the tactics come from the USA.

In 2022 I started tracking changes in how news outlets were describing trans people, and set up a bot to record every article pushed to the Google News index based on a handful of search phrases, including “biological sex” in both the US and UK. The amount in 2023 alone was absolutely staggering.

There are many terms to refer to a person’s sex: sex, birth sex, natal sex — and more contentiously, assigned sex at birth and biological sex.

“All evolutionary biologists know that variation itself is life’s only irreducible essence”—Gould

Evolutionary biology is the study of how complicated and diverse life can be; the field has its jerks, but a good evolutionary biologist learns pretty fast that life doesn’t like boundaries or binaries
Hey, fellow evolutionary biologists:

If you support trans rights, like, comment, or repost this. I want to show that transphobes like Richard Dawkins are a loud minority that does not represent our community
And that’s a follow.

Actually I do have a question if you have a sec.

Without exception the most transphobic group of scientists I’ve run into online are evolutionary biologists. Every single one of them has expressed the same opinion: transness cannot be anything other than social contagion. Why?

I consider myself a biological anthropologist who sometimes has to engage with evolutionary biologists.

In EB, too often the conclusions are about how biology determines culture. In BA, we learn that culture & biology are interrelated, affecting each other but not determining (that’s too narrow).

My training was very firmly in an evolution oriented EEB dept. As a visibly GNC queer, I have actually found EEB spaces to be a more welcoming home than neuroscience. Working on animal sexual behavior from an EEB perspective really highlights the sheer diversity of ways that sex can be organized.

Rather excellent thread

Let’s be very clear here. This is exactly why it was exceptionally unwise of the Supreme Court to wade into this space using ‘biological sex’ as a defining concept, because as soon as you talk to actual biologists the simple binary unravels. Not a stable basis for law.
