When I was 11 and again at 13, my friend and I wrote letters to our older self. In mine, I said that I better not get married before age 27. I never did get married. I’m in a committed, long term relationship, but not need. Can’t tell you how many people tell me I was smart for it.

It's not a sophisticated reaction, but my response to both "quiet, piggy" and the Coast Guard okaying swastikas and nooses is a deep sadness that the compassion we're working so hard to foster in our children will not just be challenged by schoolyard bullies but by the highest levels of society.

The idea that the universalist ideals of decency, respect, or kindness could be *genuinely felt* by anyone is alien to them. They can only interpret that kind of behavior as "virtue signaling," some kind of clever second-order selfishness. Everyone is bad if you dig enough. That's bedrock belief.

That's what they mean when they say he "tells it like it is" -- not that he's reporting empirical truth (that's lib thinking), but rather that he's letting that interior ugliness out into the world, without apology. "Everyone is like this, he's just brave enough to be open about it."
