Now's probably a good time to finally make a pinned post. Hey there! Writing for tech is my day job, but I also draw, animate, and take photos when I'm not working. I do all four on my website.

I just want everyone to have the experience of living in dignity with access to sufficient food, safe housing, needed medical care, high quality education, and time to engage with what sparks their curiosity and spirit

this should not be controversial 🫠

On this day, we were introduced to 'Central OL', who was photographed on the front line in very nice workwear and shoes, wearing a not-cheap leather handbag. Absolute queen. You can understand why she inspired protest art!

Just a reminder that archive .is openly courts right-wing extremists to use their site to coordinate harassment campaigns and to filter any concerns about "preservation" accordingly
The FBI is trying to unmask the owner of infamous archiving site Archive.is, according to a subpoena the site posted. No other information given, the site quietly posted the document a few days ago. FBI telling domain registrar to hand over all sorts of ID'ing info

Rosalind Franklin died at 37 of ovarian cancer attributed to radiation exposure from the methods she & her assistant used to photograph a cross-section of the DNA double helix.

Meanwhile, Watson won a Nobel off that work & survived to the ripe old age of 97 by simply: stealing those notes!

Totally besides the point of this grim article, but I can't help but laugh at Brad Bird going to WB to bring Ray Gunn back from the dead, then Lasseter convinces Bird to direct it at Skydance instead, and then David Ellison supposedly wants to buy WB anyway.

The double splitscreen shot from 1:13-1:42 is one of the most insane shots created during the photochemical era.

You’ve got a real woman fondling Maroon and Valiant at both ends of the shot, with the woman’s body hidden by splitscreens that run along the edges of the fluted columns in the BG…

I guess LACMA didn't get the memo that Halloween was six days ago, because I shouldn't be saying "Boooooooo" in November.
Update: LACMA leadership did not voluntarily recognize the union

I *think* I spotted my first tropical orb weaver during a walk earlier this week. I'm not 100% though — my searching involved looking up "California spiders" and comparing my photo to whatever seemed to bear the closest resemblance.

Fan sites like this were fairly common back in the 90s and early 2000s but they're a dying breed today, so it's cool to see one like this still up and active even if I wasn't familiar w/ it back then (never played Roger Wilco). This is what I think of when I hear "web 1.0", not GeoCities templates.
My Space Quest site, Roger Wilco's Virtual Broomcloset, launched 30 years ago this month. That makes it one of the oldest video game fan sites on the web.

To celebrate the milestone, I've updated the site for the first time in ages with tons of new content. Check it out! wiw.org/~jess/roger.html

The web's first and most comprehensive Space Quest fan site, packed with Easter eggs, trivia, downloads, and retrospectives on Sierra's classic adventure series.

Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

A darkly funny irony to this is it shows the current admin. knows squat about art history because all they'd have to do is show J.C. Leyendecker's art instead. This is a good Twitter thread from Erik Ojo about Leyendecker's work for the Saturday Evening Post.

I was too caught up in bullshit yesterday to remember to post this when it would've been more relevant and funnier, but a belated Happy Day Before Halloween on Halloween nonetheless! Watch scary movies, eat candy, or watch Knockin' On Heaven's Door, it's a solid action film if you haven't seen it.
