I’m 41. In my life, every single professed value of the right has turned out to be a bad faith lie they said to amass power: small government? ICE raids & book bans. Free market? Kleptocracy & mercantilist tariffs. Free speech? Arresting protesters and firing professors. It was always a lie.

So I'm grumpy that we seem to be once again creating a dynamic in our party where the people who got to the right answer sooner are marginalized for doing so, while people who were wrong get credit for changing their minds once it became obvious they were wrong. (See also NAFTA, Iraq War, Gaza.)

José Armando Torres Rivera was convicted of participating in a gang rape and other crimes in 1991 in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He was #exonerated in 2020 after DNA analysis excluded him from biological evidence recovered from the survivor's clothing.

I heard him tell this story at an ALI event and cringed so hard I pulled a muscle. If a novelist had a character tell this story to demonstrate just how out of touch he was, I'd blame the editor for letting such a two-dimensional, on-the-nose attempt at character development slip through.
