Is the Great Barrier Reef collapsing?
It’s the largest living structure on Earth, 3000 individual reefs, 900 islands, 1430 miles, and it may be collapsing.

Today's federal budget puts nearly $90-billion toward capital spending, national defense, housing & economic growth. But one thing is missing: nature.

Instead, it incl:

❌ The possible end of the oil & gas emissions cap
❌ Cuts to ECCC & the DFO
❌ No new funding to protect or restore biodiversity

Anyone who thinks the invasive species problem is exaggerated, that it's "all just nature", should experience the cemetery that is a native Irish rainforest choked by rhododendron, as so many are.

Invasives are a *human* impact, and one of the top causes of biodiversity loss on Earth.

How very sad. Reflects our declining biodiversity - we don’t protect what we don’t care about. Plastic lawns! Cemented over front gardens.

#NatureConnectedness refers to the closeness of an individual’s relationship with other species.

Low levels of nature connectedness have been identified as one of three major underlying causes of biodiversity loss alongside inequality & the prioritization of individual, material gains.
Canada's low ranking here is no surprise

So far, in 2025, atmospheric carbon dioxide is at a record level, likely worsened by a sudden drop in land carbon uptake partly due to El Niño and intense forest fires.

Yes, I'm angry, and deeply saddened. I'm so tired of the enablers that are actively contributing to our dying planet. Pieces like @zoedaniel.bsky.social's do tremendous harm to genuine environmental law reform and are deeply upsetting to the many scientists and experts on the front lines.

Can someone remind Albo, Watt, @leanaustralia.bsky.social & @zoedaniel.bsky.social that EPBC laws are for Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation❓️

Given the @albomp.bsky.social gov's track record🧵👇, their interventions are betw deeply unhelpful & outright betrayal of public interest
1️⃣ on coming to power in 2022, instead of addressing EPBC reforms that had been languishing post Samuel review, they wasted 15 months on the unasked for Nature Repair Market (of highly dubious environmental value)

Yep, agree.
We've already been subjectively & on paper 'balancing', triple-bottom-lining, & no-net-lossing Australia's biodiversity & ecosystems to death over the last 25 yrs of the EPBC Act. Despite it, everything's in decline - death by a 1000 cuts.
Now it seems that process will be fast-tracked.

The media coverage of the EPBC reforms has largely been terrible.

Two key points that many omit:

1. The _primary function_ of the Environment Protection & Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 is clear in its name. Hint, it's not to fast track development or 'balance business & the environment'.
