What's dangerous about these accumulated choices to cover the end of constitutional rule of law as a debate between reasonable sides is that it reflects a deep truth about constitutionalism: that the rules of the game are established purely by convention & the alignment of mutual expectation.
This “explicit” is a weird editorial choice. The constitution gives the president no power over this at all. It’s not ambiguous.

Frankly, it seems unclear that all of us will live through this. Eventually Stephen Miller will start using these armed soldiers the way he clearly wants to. Everyone is so afraid of challenging the pathetic "crimefighting" pretext that they're letting him build a force to crush democracy.
