Not sure I agree with this. We have them in France, they do their job, everyone carries theirs all the time, no complaints. French people I know are astonished that it's possible to vote in the UK without one.
Compulsory ID cards are an expensive threat to democracy and freedom.

One of the big historical conundrums is - 'How and why did ordinary Germans participate in, or willfully ignore, the holocaust?' Because of course, most of them had (at the very least) an inkling of what was going on. They've had a long and painful reckoning with this truth #Gaza
