YOU GUYS, I FINALLY GOT TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS! my neighbors have giant spotlights outside so i went up to a nearby lake and it was great. There's was 100s of people there, apparently the michigan aurora chasers group planned an outing. it was like summer weekend crowded!

The solar wind is still cooking! Bz is tanking to -20 nT now and wind speeds are extremely elevated > 800 km/s. The central U.S. could see more aurora tonight during substorm activity. Keep an eye on things, and I’ll update as the night goes on.

I really need to get to bed, but I just poked my head out the back door again. This is the view from my deck. All of this is looking south. When the geomagnetic storms are like this, the oval overshoots me and stretches into the US, which is why so many are seeing it tonight. #aurora
