There’s a big list of requirements for @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social and @lucympowell.bsky.social as Labour’s deputy leadership candidates!

@hannahmerich.bsky.social & I argue that central among them is giving this Labour govt a compelling story & vision, drawing on our rich history of ideas:

I’ll be reflecting on the need for our deputy leader to articulate a coherent Labour philosophy and vision as I cast my vote this week. #Labour #DeputyLeader #Election

“Yet this is the problem. Debate and intellectual discourse no longer define this Labour Party.”

Bingo - this is why @hannahmerich.bsky.social and I argue that our next deputy leader needs to change that in @labourlist.bsky.social:

Plato said it best: “Either philosophers must become rulers, or the people who are now rulers become real, true philosophers”

The Labour Party needs a deputy leader who will articulate a Labour philosophy and vision, to give this government a compelling narrative and vision for Britain:

I realise the audience for this would just be "me, and also maybe other foreigners" but I would love to read something on why Brits, who are happy to live in a country where their every movement outside is filmed by CCTV, hate the idea of having ID cards, something plenty of countries happily have

I'll have more to say on Reform's proposals to scrap ILR at some point but for now I'll just note this - anyone telling you this is a popular idea doesn't know the polling. Overwhelming majority of public back giving people who work and pay taxes most or all rights after 5 years or less

Really enjoyed this evening’s @renewaljournal.bsky.social lecture from Anneliese Dodds.

She’s right that delivery in government is necessary but not sufficient. Labour must protect democracy and be a voice for humans in the age of AI.

#Labour #AI #democracy
Renewal is excited to announce Dr. Anneliese Dodds MP as the inaugural speaker for our new annual Rita Hinden Memorial Lecture.

The Lecture will be held on Tuesday 9th September at City St. George's University.

It's maddening to me how much Covid is at the root of so many of today's crises and we just...don't talk about it?

Take the spike in children needing SEND provision. Did anything huge and traumatic happen recently that might have affected thousands of kids? No? Must be parents making it up

If MPs aren't 100% convinced that safeguards for vulnerable people are watertight, their obligation is to vote against the #TerminallyIllAdults Bill today. #AssistedDying

Please can we go back to those days?
To take my tongue out of my cheek, the joy of having worked on a daily newsletter for the best part of 12 years now is having a physical reminder that I am not being nostalgic - the dominant question from 2013 to 2021 really wasn’t “how will this play electorally” EVERY DAY.
What George doesn't understand is that in the UK, we decided in 2020 that 'governing' was actually a tedious distraction from 'speculating about, and positioning for, the next general election'. It's core to our culture and it is *very* disrespectful to criticise it.

Farage has made at least nine trips abroad, including eight to the US, since last year’s general election, with many of them either funded by donors or undertaken for paid employment such as speeches.

Just realised the 2015 UK general election was *10* years ago this week.

Wild that we dodged the bullet of chaos with @edmilibandmp.bsky.social and enjoyed a decade of uninterrupted stability and growth.

Another annual myth, just like the ‘Winterval’ one that’s been circulating since I was a kid
No, Cadbury hasn’t removed the word ‘Easter’ from its chocolate eggs, and they aren’t certified halal either (although they say most of their chocolate is suitable for those following a halal diet).
UK Cadbury chocolate eggs do say ‘Easter’ on them - Full Fact
The company says its Easter eggs aren’t halal certified either, contrary to what has been claimed online.
