In fairness, that person’s position is perfectly reasonable if you just ignore the New Testament and basically all Catholic Social Teaching.

Exactly this. If people object to Blue Labour, then articulate an alternative philosophy and vision that incorporates those values. Otherwise there's just a vacuum, and it shouldn't be a surprise if people are drawn to a movement that at least attempts to fill it.
