This is truly wild. Now is a moment science should be *increasing* its research programs, even if it requires borrowingβ€”both growing local talent and poaching the best talent from the US as the Trump administration torches research south of the border.

I learned yesterday that apparently they rigged the vote so that you had to be there in person to participate and it was hard to be there unless you were specifically invited? Wild, self-destructive shit (to our benefit).

Alison Luchs, who has worked at the National Gallery of Art for 47 years, agreed to learn Gen Z slang and make videos because she wanted to raise interest in the museum’s art.

2026 movie #9: 3670.

I really loved this filmβ€”a tender story (in several senses) both specifically about Korea and universally about finding your place more than you ever imagined you could and about how the narratives we construct to preemptively protect ourselves tangle up our lives. Great movie.

Last year I found weird inconsistencies using native navigator.share from the browser. iOS and Android each would share either the image or text but not both. Hopefully that's fixed by now 🀞

Very grateful to my past self for writing up such a good summary of an old work in progress. That branch is going to save me hours πŸŽ‰

This book has been catching my eye for a while, and it makes so much sense that it first appeared on @scpwiki.com. Time to finally pick up a copy and read!

Currently reading Iain M Bank's Matter, closing in on finishing the Culture books.

Next will probably still be @aptshadow.bsky.social's Shards of Earth, but folks on this thread have gotten me quite excited about Night Ship by Alex Woodroe and There Is No Anti-Memetics Division by qntm!

Awesome! I am somehow even more excited πŸ˜€

This looks amazing! To the point that I had to stop reading a review because it sounds like the kind of book that rewards you jumping in with as little knowledge as possible. Ordering from my local store now πŸ˜€
The Night Ship by Alex Woodroe. Dark β€”in a very literal senseβ€”SciFi with a very well crafted backstory set in CeauΘ™escuβ€˜s Romania where it is getting more & more difficult to discern people from monsters & where normal people carry their own monsters of betrayal within. Strong female lead character

Thank you so much! This has been such a cool project, me and @meakoopa.bsky.social have been working on it for a few years. I'm glad you like it πŸ˜€

Whoops! Thanks for the heads-up. Accidentally copied all the predictions for that category, I'll get that cleaned up.

2026 movie #8: Heat.

A super well constructed, long-but-full crime drama. Not honestly my genre, but so well madeβ€”glad to have seen it finally.

2026 movie #7: Lady Snowblood. A really cool revenge drama set in that fascinating moment in Japanese history where traditional village life and western-influenced modernity coexisted and jostled. You can really see how much Tarentino took for Kill Bill.

2016 movie #6: Albert Pyun's Captain America. The director's cut isβ€”seen in 2025β€”wonderfully uncertain politically, formally creative, and unbeholden to Marvel mythology. Honestly, it's kinda a good movie!
