it's not like there's recourse on the back end for pardon buyers if what they bought turns out to be snake oil
New in PN: Ed Martin's peculiar view of pardon power

"Since Martin neither knows what he’s doing or cares whether it’s legal, he’s perfectly willing to float the most unconstitutional trial balloons, such as 'Trump can pardon people for state crimes.'"
Ed Martin's peculiar view of pardon power
Trump's pardon attorney is very confused about how pardons work.

I'm less concerned about the polygraph and more concerned about the thought process that led to letting Dan Bongino skip the polygraph. If FBI agents normally had to pass a oujia board and Dan Bongino didn't, I'd still wonder what they didn't want him to have to answer.
As the FBI’s deputy director, Dan Bongino receives some of the country’s most sensitive secrets, including the President’s Daily Brief. His ascent to that position without passing a standard bureau background check is unprecedented, insiders say.

This is arguably an exercise in "what's popular is whatever Republicans approve of that Democrats don't entirely hate". But generally, yes, there is advantage in conveying to voters "we stood up for what's right, but not at the expense of hungry kids". That's not too complex for voters to understand

The great task for Democrats, which is greatly assisted by not being in the majority, is conveying to voters that skyrocketing insurance premiums are wholly Republicans' handiwork

a notable thing in the Epstein correspondence is that Larry Summers is asking him to be a wingman, how to get girls, and so forth, at the same time as Larry Summers' wife is writing to him about Lolita and My Antonia.

I have a prediction! It's "the Republican Party will get worse before it gets even worse"
I have no idea what will be the eventual consequence of what has been happening in the US over the past week except I will predict things will get a lot weirder.

gonna be honest I've mostly felt this way since BigBalls showed up. you don't consolidate an authoritarian state with BigBalls
I am well aware that they are and will continue to do massive damage to this country

but does it feel like they’re on a glide path to successful authoritarian consolidation anymore? I submit that it does not

I could be mistaken. But every time Trump rails about Epstein, he doesn’t sound angry, or affronted. He sounds scared.

Apart from the emails, the reason the Epstein files "reemerged" when the government shutdown ended is that the shutdown was being used as an excuse not to swear in the 218th signature on the discharge petition.
When Fox News doesn't know how to spin a story the network ignores it. @stephaniemiller.bsky.social found a way to bring up the Epstein emails on Hannity. Greg Gutfeld downplayed it on "The Five." It wasn't mentioned on Fox & Friends or The Ingraham Angle.

No matter what he’s accused of, literally no one ever says “That doesn’t sound like the Donald Trump I know.”
There were plenty of allegations and the Access Hollywood clip pre-2016 election. It’s horrifying but none of it should be a surprise to anyone. It’s not like it seems out of character for him.

Breaking news: Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated she has appointed a prosecutor to examine the relationships between Jeffrey Epstein and other prominent Democrats, including former president Bill Clinton, as requested by President Trump today.
Bondi says Justice will investigate relationships to Epstein suggested by Trump
President Donald Trump suggested the relationships between the disgraced financier and several prominent Democrats deserve more scrutiny than his own connections to Epstein.

if there were anything they could get clinton on with regard to epstein, they would have already done it, and as far as blocking the release of these things because of an "active investigation", lol, good luck. also, DOJ is running on fumes with d-squad lawyers now, good luck with clinton's counsel
