In 2013, Whole Foods workers in Chicago staged a “Strikesgiving” walkout to demand Thanksgiving off.

A year later, they won: no more mandatory shifts, voluntary sign-ups, and double pay for those who work.

Proof that organizing works.

It is a sobering thought to realize that we're watching the leaders of American universities determine whether critical thinking-- and by extension, the #humanities --are still worthwhile investments.
Who invests in critical thinking and who invests in an AI chatbot to help you think will be really telling.

We need it. Not only are the classes full, but also concert halls, libraries - we've gone to a bunch of classical concerts this year as an antidote to despair and guess what - they are full. They were not as full before, but they are now.

"Humanities are shrinking" is artificially imposed top down.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

Finally started this series today, because obviously I did — very much enjoying and wondering kind of idly (and I suppose rhetorically) why these books aren't in the genre-awards conversation, as they're unequivocally speculative!

It will never not shock me, the number of self-pub writers (many of them white) who seem to believe that they are owed something by bookstores, booksellers, readers, etc.
(I want to say worse things, but shall be responsible on main.)
Self-pub writers (many of them white) on threads are fully co-opting the language of marginalization and I think we all need to recognize how gross it is.

The real cure to male loneliness is earnestly giving a shit about literally anything other than being a vague centrist troll
It feels like this is becoming a more common mass shooter profile: Someone who's interested in politics but not as a vehicle to express clear values or a coherent viewpoint. He just wants to mock anyone who takes it seriously.
