The key to fixing things is writing memorable ballads about them, apparently.
Today I learned (thanks, NPR) that from 1875 to 1975, there were more than 6,000 commercial shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. The publicity of song led to safety standard changes and there has not been a single commercial wreck since then.

Another great @sdhistcon.bsky.social thing: delicious lunches at Point Loma Seafood, with waterfront views. Scallop sandwich yesterday, fish one today, both excellent.

Very excited for the @sdhistcon.bsky.social Summit convention this week. Getting up at 5 a.m. for a flight will be well worth it. I'm teaching Undaunted, Shores of Tripoli, China's War, Cross-Bronx Expressway, 1846, Gest of Robin Hood, and Littoral Commander, and playing Fire in the Lake and 1861.

There are good reasons to think Drew Brees' second NFL booth stint (seemingly replacing Mark Sanchez this time) may work better than his first. New (free) Bucholtz Sports Media post on that: andrewbucholtz.com/posts/drew-b...
Drew Brees' reported new Fox gig provides a much better chance for him as a booth analyst
Drew Brees' reported role replacing Mark Sanchez on the NFL on Fox looks like a much better way into game analysis for him than his NBC start.

Obviously very dumb, but it is funny to see the reverse of the Berlin Airlift.
NEW: The US Army website for its bases in Bavaria, Germany told its soldiers and employees that it might need to obtain free food from the German government during the US government shutdown.

The Army later altered publication to remove a list of food banks, but we have the original text here:
US Army Tells Soldiers to Go to German Food Bank, Then Deletes It
The initial 'Shutdown Guidance' for the US Army Garrison Bavaria included instructions to go to German food banks.

What's the CRT for sandwich-throwing, and what gives you a DRM or a column shift? (Also, I'm glad that CRTs have made Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combat_...)

Don't be afraid of the ball
The idea that baseball is a cruel, unsupportive sport doesn't need re-recognition. That notion has been around for as long as sportswriters could count to three, doing our best to ape dear, old, Tenny...

As a kid, my first exposure to Bill Murray was in Space Jam. I thought for a long time he was just a random friend of Michael Jordan, who Jordan was surprisingly mean to.
I think everybody has a “Wallace Shawn from Young Sheldon” — my first one would probably be “Vincent Price, the guy who did the voice of Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective”
