"At all events, had I had the power to command both armies, I would not have changed the orders under which he seemed to be acting" is such an amazing burn of Hood's invasion of Tennessee.

And closed out today with Littoral Commander and one of my favourites, A Few Acres of Snow. Awesome convention. Thanks to everyone who took the time to play, talk, or just say hi!

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful @sdhistcon.bsky.social! Always a highlight of my year. So great to see amazing people and teach and play games. A few further highlights: Team Undaunted, 1846, Waterways, and Chalice of Poison.

Another great @sdhistcon.bsky.social thing: delicious lunches at Point Loma Seafood, with waterfront views. Scallop sandwich yesterday, fish one today, both excellent.

Had an amazing time demoing Cross-Bronx Expressway for two tables at @sdhistcon.bsky.social this morning. Thanks to @alexknight.bsky.social, @yoyoni.bsky.social, and Justin DeVries (and, not pictured, @mirikuski.bsky.social, Damani Pant, and Nathaniel James) for playing!

And Grant would not approve of games that give Confederate troops better ratings.

Another interesting part of this, Grant's comments on Lew Wallace delaying Jubal Early at Monocacy Junction and how Early might have taken Washington without that. Adds to the case for the importance of that battle. (Marc Leepson's "Desperate Engagement" is a good read on that.)

And Grant is very right on the merits of Johnston's delaying tactics for strategic will, especially around the 1864 election. Going to John "Leeroy Jenkins" Bell Hood and his all-out attacks proved disastrous.

Got up to the part on Sherman's Atlanta campaign, which reminds me of one of my favourite quotes. May we all outflank the devil. www.americanheritage.com/1864-one-hun...

Reading U.S. Grant's memoirs, which are excellent. This shot at Braxton Bragg made me cackle.

Wildcats and Miss Amerikan Vampire were fun too.

Had a blast last night at the first Quaalords show I've been able to make in a while. They remain terrific.

(The note on "Walk Hard" is true for me also, though.)
October 29, 2025 at 9:35 PM
Joystick! was excellent too. Heck of a show. And a great, intimate venue at Courtyard Brewery.
October 24, 2025 at 3:46 AM
Having a blast watching some live music. The Rooks, Hell Beach, and Omnigone were all great, and Joystick! is up next.

Got in a great all-day game of Twilight Imperium IV. Didn't win, but the Nomad was a blast to play.
October 19, 2025 at 12:17 AM
General is studying up to play military history games.
October 10, 2025 at 6:33 PM
Very excited about a couple new games I pre-ordered from @gmtgames.bsky.social, Cross-Bronx Expressway and China's War. These look great!
October 8, 2025 at 11:07 PM
Free teaser: here's a chart I put together of 2014-17 ALCS ratings with or without Jays, showing a likely drop of 1.5-2 million U.S. viewers (or 26-38%) with them. (Click to embiggen.) That's notable, but not devastating, considering multi-year broadcast deals and corresponding CAN increase.
October 8, 2025 at 9:46 PM
Got in some great gaming today: Captains of Industry and the Fellowship of the Ring trick-taking game.

And, two books later ("The Halfling's Gem," 1990). Bonus marks for "We three are not so different" this time.
September 12, 2025 at 9:08 PM
An early (1988!) example of @briancgrubb.bsky.social's favorite "We're not so different" line, this time between a human barbarian and a drow ranger.(R.A. Salvatore, "The Crystal Shard.")
September 11, 2025 at 6:24 PM
Some fun recent games: Only Murders In The Building, Fit To Print, The Chosin Few, Artisans of Splendid Vale.
