It’s time to *do politics* again. Stop being led by the nose on polling. Stop trying to perfect your rhetoric.

It’s time to think in heterodox, bold, and creative ways. That’s not a left-right prescription. It’s about moving beyond the tinkering approach we’ve had for decades. That’s dead.
There's massive opposition to Trump. Yet our institutions don't act as sufficient constraints on a president when he's determined to plunge us into authoritarian lawlessness.

Elrod and I end up agreeing this should inform what's next (discussing @jvl.bsky.social):

More than 34,000 Minnesotans signed up to be trained as ICED observers with various activist groups in recent weeks, many of them since Jan. 7, when a federal agent shot and killed Renée Good.
Thousands of new ICE watchers hit the streets after two killings
Minnesotans outraged by the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti have signed up in large numbers to monitor and protest ICE with other activists.

Lots of good points in here about pushing when you have the advantage, but also this key point, which essentially boils down to “You want our votes. You solve it.”

folks, you can't give a gangster a suitcase full of money with a sticky note that says “do not use for crimes” on it and expect the money to not be used for crimes. the demand has to be “no more money for the criminal gang.”
"Tighten the rules on warrants" is just "make crime illegal."

Who is going to enforce these new rules because I promise you they're simply not going to follow them?

The problem of the president deploying a private police force is not solved by telling them to behave better.
SCHUMER says Democrats are “united” behind three DHS reforms

1/ End roving patrols; tighten the rules on warrants and require ICE to coordinate with local authorities.

2/ Enforce accountability; a uniform code of conduct.

3/ Require masks off, body cameras on, agents carry ID.

senate democrats — there's already a law requiring warrants issued upon probable cause (see below — sorry if it's hard to read, it's from 1789), and the administration is already violating it hourly.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

It's not quite the most pressing issue at the moment, but the American people absolutely have a right to know the names of the federal officials who shot and killed a man peacefully protesting, who was on his knees, prone in the street when they shot him in the back.

confronted with so much horror, death, and cruelty (and it isn't close to over yet), we mustn't forget that our actions matter, and can, in fact, bend history in the direction of justice.
not over yet, but I literally cannot express the depth of my gratitude for the all the observers, patrollers, plate checkers, dispatchers, commuters who continue to successfully protect this city, sometimes at the cost of their wellbeing or lives. so many neighbors were not stolen, because of you

The last few years have seen the largest wave of immigration in American history. All those images we carry in our heads about people arriving at Ellis Island — we just surpassed that. Crime went down. Real wages went up. This is a fake problem. Enough is enough.

Immigration is a fake problem. We have politicians on the one hand who want to use immigrants as scapegoats for our real ones and politicians on the other who are too cowardly to stand against them and tell the truth. That is the entire situation. Until that changes, people will continue to die.

Look at the structural reasons for why Nordic cultures were and remain highly resistant to radicalization, and why Americans remain vulnerable to radicalization. Nordic societies don't avoid extremism because they are morally superior; they do so because they built institutional shock absorbers. 1/
