1. Some good news at last. This week’s column is about the amazing thing a couple of us stumbled into three years ago, which we’ve now developed into a global research programme. It doesn’t change everything, of course, but it could help change quite a lot. + 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Whilst a lot of what Bill Gates wrote in his memo makes a certain amount of sense, his main point that short term emissions reduction is not the priority is based on flawed and out of date data.

I’ve scribbled on his graph below to add a very important line - reality.

In a functioning society, this would have been front page news everywhere.

In our society, this didn't make the fine print.

As @georgemonbiot.bsky.social pointed out once, it's quite depressing to check the headlines when you know what the real headline should be...

What has Yvette Cooper’s proscription of Palestine Action done to this country?

Beyond absurd. It’s extreme authoritarianism. These police should be arresting rapists & crooks, not neglecting those duties to spend time arresting citizens standing against genocide.

It undermines police and the law.

One of the overlooked risks in the uplands. Banning heather burning will most likely cause a huge increase in ticks and their associated nasty illnesses. Tall heather & bracken as well as brash layers from heather cutting will be perfect habitats.

Peatlands are complex and so is there hydrology - and terminology!
Reading this paper will hopefully help people better understand why not to use the "peatland = sponge" claim.
I really enjoyed contributing to this peatland paper. Down with the sponge analogy!
