In 2020, I lost my race for the Iowa House. I went to grad school to study one of the biggest problems I saw facing our country: affective (emotional) polarization. In ‘23 I graduated with an MA in Government from Johns Hopkins. I’m going to use this account to share what I learned, …

I can't emphasize enough that the most important thing journalists can do right now is publish exactly this kind of article

“These are normal, everyday people who are saying I’ve had enough. I’ve seen institutions fall. I’ve seen universities, I’ve seen businesses, I’ve seen law firms not stand up, not support our liberal democracy. So what am I going to do as an individual?”

Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements

More of this, please.
I'm proud to be part of this statement released by 68 @uvalaw.bsky.social faculty colleagues, on the recent executive orders and administration actions. tinyurl.com/statementof6...

It's great to see so many law colleagues speaking up for the rule of law & the legal profession.

The tariffs are catastrophic. But so too are the abuses of power, so is the corruption, so are the police state tactics, so is the destruction of our health care infrastructure, so are the ways our national security is being endangered, so are the attacks on our core freedoms.

We tried mass tariffs in 1828, and it crashed the economy. We tried again in 1930, and it crashed the economy.

Third time’s the charm, I guess.

Wow, ok, this put a huge lump in my throat this morning. You know the 4 US soldiers who died in Lithuania? (Video in linked post.)

HUNDREDS of Lithuanians showed up to pay their respects.

Rump played golf.

I read a lot of political thrillers. WEEKS ago, I said to my husband that what was happening in our country was just way, way, too much for one book. No editor would approve all of this.
Sort of feels like we're all characters in a book and the author got bored with the plot and decided to blow things up.

Going forward, I am hereby banning the word “calorie.”

“Lizard brain hate action”—this is indeeed a better descriptor of Trump’s actions than “4D chess.” The guy can’t even play regular chess.
I'm firmly in the NO PLAN camp. There's no strategy here. I read even some liberal commentary theorizing this is Trump's secret plan to do x,y, or z. It's not. It's all lizard brain hate-action. That's it.

The administration is trying to destroy free speech and freedom of the press. The White House Correspondents Association does not want to offend them while they're doing it. Sad days when journalists are the ones greasing the slippery slope to fascism.

They want elected Ds to acknowledge we’re in an emergency and 2. act like it.

It’s not complicated.
