It’s not just about what you remove (cars, noise, dirty air). It’s about what you add (people walking, a lot of bike parking, trees, outdoor dining, and room for kids to play safely). Amsterdam: 1986 and today.

Streets for people.

You don’t have to ban cars everywhere to transform your city centre. But you do have to seriously rethink and redefine the car’s role. There are many ways to do that, from #completestreets to #sharedstreets, pedestrian priority streets & Dutch #woonerfs, that prioritize streets for people, not cars.

To be very clear, in case there's any misunderstanding, these properties are all in the same city and pay the exact same tax rate. It's the assessed value that's broken.

First example again, even though they currently have the same listing price, the assessed value is:

Let’s remember that when #OttCity had a chance to lead, we voted to expand sprawl into a swamp (Tewin); we voted to landfill buildings in support of sports; we backtracked on aggressive climate change; we’ve had opp to lead from the front but don’t. 1/
As #COP30 negotiations call for strengthened climate resilience, cities are already leading the way.

From Lagos to Freetown, bold, local action is already happening. See how C40 Cities and @danishmfa.bsky.social are supporting this vital work 🎥 ⬇️

Many city halls are deep in budget-time. Some are pushing austerity ideologies, and are ignoring the difference between costs and cost-savers/value creators. Citizens, PAY ATTENTION, and never forget that the TRUTH about a city’s REAL aspirations isn’t found in its visions. It’s found in its budget.

It’s a predictable pattern. Suburban and rural (mainly) voted to spend more, get less, align themselves with private interest to fund a project that doesn’t affect them, delivering lower value at the expense of urban quality of life and wrecking women’s pro hockey in the capital.

Why is this so? Because the housing market determines your assessment, which is why homes in the boonies pay less property tax than some 1bdrm condos downtown. System doesn't make sense: not related to municipal services rec'd or ability to pay. #onpoli
Ontario property assessments haven't been done since 2016 and it's getting ridiculous. Suburban homes are paying much lower property taxes than they should be.

And it's a perverse system, as a house out in the boonies (4 bdrm) will pay less in property taxes than a condo downtown (2 bdrm) because the housing market determines the assessment on which the properties are taxed. Nothing to do with the value of municipal services received or the ability to pay.
MPAC is supposed to reassess property values every four years, but it has now been nearly a decade. The Ford Government has postponed assessments indefinitely to look into the 'fairness' of the system. Ironic given the resulting unfairness.

Lansdowne 2.0 was just approved by Council 15-10, and it's definitely worth taking note of the geographical imbalance on the vote.

The two out-of-place "yes" votes are Marty Carr (Alta Vista) and Stéphanie Plante (Rideau-Vanier):
