Transracial international adoption is complex and has its share of problems, obviously, but dang it, if it didn't give me so much fodder to clap back at racists and xenophobes

Anyway happy National Adoption Month

Thanks to the holidays and the judicious use of PTO, today is the last Friday I am working in 2025. I'm going to see Wicked: For Good tonight, I'm about to finish the first phase of a project, and I am listening to last night's episode of Critical Role. It's a good day, folks

Fundamentalism is: I am right because I *have* to be right, because if I am in any way incorrect that means that I am bad and I will be subject to shame and rejection and I am going to lose any power and autonomy that I have, and that is also how I am going to treat you if you are incorrect.

US citizen Maria Greeley, a Latina who was adopted, was walking home from work downtown when masked agents zip tied her. They said she “doesn’t look like a Greeley.” This is how the government treats people under current deportation policies.

Weird thing I realized while helping my dad declutter the house: My maternal grandma had a thing for decoupaging random stuff, my mom had a thing for wallpapering random stuff (including wood furniture 😬), and I have a thing for putting stickers on random stuff.

and what did you think it meant, then,
when we got told to ask for
God's will to be done here
like it is in heaven

did you think it meant
that you got to do what you wanted
because you hold his favor

because that's not favor, brother,
that's judgment

One of my favorite Halloween traditions :)
Japan's "Mundane Halloween" costume contest is back!

Each year website DailyPortalZ holds a contest where people dress up as something super duper ordinary.

Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2025 contest!

Making: plans for the weekend and for my conference in Charleston next week; plans for November and December; plans for 2026 Q1 (yes, already) Cooking: soup (my family has a tradition of making this particular soup the first time it gets cold out--it's ground beef and the canned tomato sauce and canned mixed veggies, although I've switched over to frozen because those don't include lima beans; it's very straightforward but it hits the spot, and it takes to whatever spices or condiments you want to put in there) Drinking: French roast coffee, HEB bootleg Coke Zero, lots and lots of water…

I had a couple of cousins when I was a little kid to whom I had no relationship other than we were adopted around the same time and our parents were in the same adoptee family support group; yes, their parents were my aunt and uncle (and mine were theirs)

One of the reasons I'm a Christian is because we believe God understands human suffering from inside of it. God has undergone physical pain, shame, persecution, fear, grief, all of it; he has not distanced himself from it but has entered into it.

Another thought: Is Stephen's death and Philip going out to the Ethiopian eunuch to explain the Scripture (like Jesus x the two disciples on the road to Emmaus) and then getting taken up part of the same pattern? In both cases it's right around the church in general getting pushed outward
Read Acts 12 earlier today and it occurs to me that Luke's framing Peter's escape as a type of resurrection (right after James's death)--the church, like her Lord, dies and rises again, to the embarrassment of the rulers of this world
