This is an important point. Like, yes, we need to be vigilant about all the negatives of mining. But no, of course making batteries, solar cells, and wind mills is not as bad for the planet as digging up coal and oil and *setting it on fire*
I am genuinely trying to figure out how so many people are concerned about the environmental impact of mining materials for *reusable, rechargeable, and recyclable batteries which last decades* when what we currently do is extract energy from the ground, refine it, then set fire to it.

People on TANF and SNAP also "earned" those benefits through previous tax payments. Think of the safety net as being payments to your future self from the past or vice versa not just person 1 to person 2 in the present.

Yeah, this is approaching the key difference, isn't it.
For batteries, the thing you need is the lithium, the actual atoms. Those atoms stay being lithium atoms no matter what you do with them.
For oil, the thing you need is the *chemical bonds*, which you use by *breaking* them.
