The Garcia case shows a Government can terrorise an individual with malicious motives with little recourse if there is no overarching body like the ECHR holding it to account for abuse of human rights.

Remember Fasists first dehumanise then treat inhumanely.

Hitler did it, Trump is doing it.

Daily Mail headline today, Labour running scared of voters. Who knew continuing to hold the daily morning lobby briefing, cancelling a sparsly attended daily 2nd lobby briefing and speaking directly to the voters instead was running acared. Here's the actual Government announcement.

All this talk of Europe divided... of course it is "divided." It is a federal democratic continental sized union. There will always be some division. But it is striking how united it actually it is on the big issues, especially Ukraine, and how much it gets done.

The EU is getting stronger.

The EU showed that it works. It not only functions. But at a really high level. It's policy proposals are rigorous. It's leaders are determined to act. And it finds ways hammer out policy agreements, make compromises, squeeze obstacles (or pay them off), to make progress. 7/

This also means the leverage these states have over the EU just got seriously diminished. That is big.

Fourth, Hungary was neutered. The EU showed it would not let a few small states block it from acting. The principle of unanimity was dealt a huge institutional blow. That is a BFD. Often a major obstacle to EU action is just the assumption that Hungary, etc would block. 5/

Third, they actually froze the frozen Russian assets. Every 6 months the EU had to vote to keep the assets frozen and sanctions in place, giving Orban a hostage. The EU found a way to get around this (lawyers ftw!). So the assets are still their to be tapped. And almost certainly will be. 4/

Second, they broke the seal on Eurobonds. Germany had been resistant (when the EU borrowed for Covid recovery it was called a "one-off"). This matters because it taps a new well of funding and it is repeatable both for Ukraine and for rearmament. That's huge. 3/

The EU never gets praise even when it acts. There is so much constant EU negging that commentators struggle to praise when it delivers. The EU did what it needed to do. Take the win.

Last night was a big step for Ukraine and the European project.

First, the EU got the money for Ukraine 1/

A quick explanation of how this borrowing to assist Ukraine will work. "Enhanced cooperation" means EU law is being used, but some Member States opt out. The process has been applied a few times before, but never before re the EU budget. 1/
🚨 The latest conclusions say the EU will trigger Article 20 of enhanced cooperation to ensure that any mobilisation of EU resources to guarantee joint debt "will not have an impact on the financial obligations of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia," as previously reported by Euronews.
🚨 Bombshell at #EUCO at almost 2 am: António Costa has proposed to use common borrowing to meet Ukraine's most immediate financial needs while technical work on the reparations loan continues in the coming months.

Messy mix-match solution. Leaders are still discussing.

Noteworthy from Henry Zeffman today. If the economy improves in a tangible way then you may well see a lot of the discontent start to fade away.
Inflation down yesterday. Interest rates down to day and the BoE just announcing that inflation is likely to fall more quickly than anticipated.
